another 247 to 242 question.

I know this has probably been asked to death but I want to see if I could get some specifics on my specific situation.

I have been eyeing a 2002 Grand Cherokee with the 6cyl engine. The seller says it needs a new transfer case. Assuming it comes with the 247 will I be able to pick up any 242 from any similar year donor vehicle regardless of engine size? Or would I have to be sure the tcase came from one with the 6cyl version? Also what year range donor vehicle does it need to come from?

I am concerned about things like spline count, drive shaft lengths. Just looking for a simple in and out without worrying about extra expenses like new drive shafts and such.

Thanks for any info you can provide!

Okay, the 242 came standard in the Laredo with the 4.0 in just about every year the WJ was made and the 247 was optional. Because V8s use a different transmission, IDK if the spline count matches the 42re used in the 4.0 or not. You'll need a 242 made from 99-04 anyway because of several changes made to the unit, like cable shift and no speed sensor in them. The speed sensor was moved internal to the transmission.

Basically, any 4.0 WJ 242 will bolt into yours. You may need to change the shift bezel if you don't already have the 242 in it. (Getting the shift knobs off is a PITA!)

Check out wjjeeps.com for more info. The 2002 is a good one because it was AFTER the head cracking problem was fixed.

That's great to know. Thanks for the info. The price they are selling this one for is a steal even if I have to pay out for the t-case replacement. It looks crazy clean for its age too.

At 220K, you may be looking at a transmission rebuild. With that in mind, $800 ain't a steal. I'd go $600 max. JMHO. Plus that 4.0 is tired, but may have some life left in it. It's probably been taken care of. Those headlight assemblies look new.

Yeah - It's more of a steal for this location. People are selling older vehicles with blown head gaskets, missing or broken transmissions for around that price. If I can convince them to take 700, put a few hundred into it and get a few years out of it Ill be happy.

It's either that or a 96 Cherokee for ~ 1000

Just trying to remain patient to see what pops up and not rush into it. My brain is screaming NO YOU FOOL!

Thanks for all the info though.

Hey, man. In my younger years I spent boo-coo bucks on trash to fool around with and had lots of fun and games. Some lasted a while and some were stupid mistakes. I'm a old retired guy now and need a reliable vehicle. That's the only reason I haven't lifted my WJ. I use it in my business to deliver newspapers.

Yeah - I'm just at that stage where I don't have money for monthly car payments plus the increase in insurance for having something financed. So I just have to go in this cycle of finding something for a few years and hoping for the best. Lol.
