hello...i got a 96 gc laredo with a 5.2 v8.. its the 4x4 all time.. has stock size tires.my question is this..when i back up out of my drive way i have to turn the wheels and it scrubs like instead of the tires rolling, they are dragging .. it does this no matter if im backing up or going forwad...its just more noticable in reverse... what causes this and what would i need to do to get it to stop...

He is saying the Viscus Coupling in your Transfer case is binding. It happens in just about all Grand Cherokees with a 249 Transfer case. I personally would replace the transfer case with either a 242 as suggested or a 231. Just get rid of the 249 you have now. In my opinion its not worth fixing.

a 242 will give you a 2wd option, as well as 4wd full time (basically same as you have now). also 4hi part time and 4lo part time.
231 is essentially the same, only no 4wd full time...
it is an easy enough swap, but you may need to use parts from your 249 case, like input shaft if i recall.
it can all be done in your driveway and t-case on your workbench. all with basic tools including snap ring pliers.
you may or may not need a new rear drive shaft.

is it the same thing with the 231? i mean would you still need the input shaft?

probably, considering the 231 isn't as common in the zj.
