'99 WJ Steering column snaps turning right.
'99 Grand Cherokee Larado Steering column locks and snaps loose when turning right. A safety issue for sure. What might be the cause and repair?

After further investigation, on jackstands all four corners, turning full left to full right, no snapping. From straight forward, to full left is 1 1/2 turns. To the right is almost a full turn to lock. Cannot turn as sharply to the right. Tested running, in 4WD. Same result. I'm thinking it's steering box replacement time. Can they be rebuilt? Any guidance? Advise?

Sounds logical. Rockauto.com has the steering gear (AC Delco) for $195 + $75 core charge or a rebuild kit for $20. Your choice. I just replaced mine because it was making crackling noises.

They are Saginaw steering gears. There are YouTube videos on how the rebuild them.

Thanx dave1123. I'm picking up a steering box tomorrow from my local O'reilly's. If I had time and space, and fewer other commitments and projects, I'd consider rebuilding it. But, I just need it done.

Oh, I hear you, bro! My major problem is my WJ is my ONLY vehicle! When you install it, move the steering from extreme lock to extreme lock several times to bleed all the air out of the system. I'd also drain the pump reservoir and fill with fresh before starting it up, topping it off as needed. Be sure to use the correct fluid also.
One other thing. Make sure the mounting bolts are tightened properly and the frame is not cracked around the holes. If it is, there are stiffener plates that take care of that.
