'98 ZJ cooling fan change to electric--worth doing?
Anyone remove the clutched fan on a 4.0L GC ZJ and replace it with an electric one? Did it cool OK and did it help the gas mileage any at all?
If you did, what fan did you use? Aftermarket or one from some other vehicle?

I would like to do the swap on my 95 ZJ 4.0 too. In theory you should get more horsepower and better gas mileage. I lost close to 2mpg when I replaced the fan clutch on my rig, so less drag on the engine should help increase my mileage.

Well I made the switch from fan clutch to efan. easy project and I like the quite. my fan clutch was very noisy...Got a fan from a 94 linclon contenial 3,8 but a efan from a tauras or Sable 3.8 will work fine also.. 2 speed fan with 3 wires coming off the efan motor.. I purchased the control for the efan from Delta Controls... Brian was very helpful and has made a great product and reduced the change over to just hooking up some wires and done.. Once I got my controler from Brian only took about a couple of hours to do and I'm **** about how the wires run protected them in sleves and soldered the connections... Has been in for 4 weeks and no problems.. Here is a link.. http://www.dccontrol.com/
the nice thing about using the Mark VIII fan is that the fan motor is available from O'Reilys if you ever need repairs.. Just need to know what year it came out of...

You can buy the sensor/switch to put in the radiator that are pretty cheap to control it. Or you can do like i did and just wire up two switches and have control over the fan.

Cost of replacement
Fan form Junk yard $25.00
Controller from Delta Currant Controls, $79 plus shipping
Misc wire 12gage from NAPA 2 colors $10
About as close as I can remember.. I also pulled the fan myself and traced the wires in the car and took as much as I could get as they are 10 or 12 gage wire...and have the matching colors for the fan to be able to trace later on if there is a problem. I connected the conroller to the battery and followed his easy to understand directions. Took about a couple of hours and that included haveing to make a tool to remove the fan clutch from the pully and cutting the nut off the fan clutch to reinstall on the pully to hold the water pump pulley on the shaft which on my 5.2 was necessary.. I hear the 4.0 are a little closer to the rad and you may have to trim the fan shrould down to clear the water pump pulley. There are some threads on the site that deal directly with the 4.0L, but I've hear it is possible. It was a lot easlier then I expected and had kept my engine cool and comfortable thus far. The Taruas fan is serviceabe as the parts stores carry the motor as a stock part so I've been told by Brian at Delta Currant DC Controls.

yeah theyre really common to have in stock at an auto parts store, i was lucky to have a hookup at a parts store and got a new fan assembly for $60. They really cool the engine good and free up some power!

I had the same problem
I changed every electrical component under the hood. Ended up changing out the ECU. My old one had 3 capacitors that were fried. On another site I found a thread that stated that was a major issue with the OBD1 computers. Changed it out with a rebuilt one and jeep has ran like a champ ever since.

I swapped a dual speed fan from a ford Taurus in my 98 xj 4.0 and never overheated. Used to wheel in the summer with th ac on full blast no issues at all. The wiring was a PITA but definitely worth it
