Unhappy 98 GC 5.2; Water Pump top inlet hose not threaded for brass piece

I was reading this thread and had a related question but didnt know if it was appropriate to ask on an old thread.
https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f2/wat...et-tube-99960/

I bought a duralast waterpump from autozone and went to replace. Someone had a brass piece on the old one so I removed it to put in my new one and noticed the new one (inlet top hose area) did not have threading for it to go in. Is it supposed to be threaded?

I took it back up there and they pulled the other ones off the shelf and they were all not threaded as well. Should I try to find one that is threaded, force thread it myself, or find a workaround? Any thoughts or suggestions are appreciated!

Thanks

I believe that pipe is just press fit with an o-ring. Maybe just buy the right pipe.

That pipe on the left side of (driver side) of the water pump just slides in and is sealed with an O ring, it's held in place with a bolt on the water pump. Amazingly they don't leak very often.

Interesting. My old one has just a hose (not a metal pipe) that slips onto the brass piece. Guess I should just try and buy the new pipe.

Amazon has the pipes for less than five bucks. But if the brass nipple is working ok there is no need to change it to the pipe. The 5.2 has the unthreaded hole in the water pump that the pipe with an O ring slips into, totally different from the 4.0.

Hmm, its starting to make since. Thanks so much for the help. Mine is a 5.2l and has the threaded component with the brass piece. But that would make since why non of the parts stores have the 5.2 waterpump with the threading.

I guess I'll start with the new waterpump with the o-ring and buy the new pipe to replace the hose that was currently going to it.

That hole CAN be threaded with a pipe tap, but it's difficult to keep a taper pipe tap straight while doing it or threading it too deep. PLUS cast aluminum is tough to tap cleanly without lubricant. It's best to leave that to someone who has done it before. Not doing it properly can result in a new piece of junk!

Thanks for everyones help. I replaced it with the metal tubing attachment and bought a new hose to go over the end and clamped it tight. So far, no issues with the new pump.
