98 gc 5.2 transmission issues, or???

98 gc 5.2 transmission issues, or???
bought my jeep a few weeks ago now, and has been driving great, I've put almost 600 miles on it since I got it without much hiccup until now.
today I fired it up and went to drive down my drive way to pick up the mail. I'm idling/coasting around 6-7mph when all of the sudden a loud clunk from under the jeep (happened so sudden it was hard to pinpoint the location) came and the jeep was drug to a halt, the motor was still running, and I tried applying throttle to get moving and it felt sluggish and I noticed that it was dragging the rear end (I only moved maybe 4" before determining it was dragging out back, immediately thought to my self "well s**t the dana 44 HD is as trash as everyone says, cant believe i just snapped a shaft in my dirveway" i went to throw it in park and the park pin did that grinding noise that one would noramly get from putting it in drive while still moving, so i went back to neatrual and shut down, I walked the rest of the way to get the mail and when i came back i inspected outside and noticed no sing of the front dragging only one rear tire, I fired it back up in park and it didnt make noise, reved a little and all was fine, went to drive and tried going forward, same problem, put it in reverse and it backed right up without a hitch, back to drive and same lock up problem, at that point I shift through all the forward gears and get the same results, make to reverse and backed up no problem, this time I went to drive and it drove like nothing was wrong. idles forward a few test feet, then used some gas, the some more, no problems, took it down the driveway the rest of the way, turned around in the field still flawless, drove all the way back up the driveway slowly, and when i started going up the slight incline to the shop it took more gas to keep creeping along (a normal amount) until it just lightly stopped moving and started revving without forward movement, until maybe 2000-2300 ish where it slammed into gear and lurched forward.
Parked it for a while and went back an hour later to test.
all gears worked, 4 lo worked and it shifted between hi and low fine, it never locked up again but still does the falling out of gear thing sometimes, and randomly when i put it in drive it will rev till it slams gear. reverse is always fine.
from what I could tell during the lock up situation the front was working freely.
the transmission has not slipped at all, not even now. there is no CEL or other lights
its only done the slamming into drive thing once before and I didnt think much of it because it seemed like I hadnt moved the shifter all the way back
this is the first time its locked up like that, and it hasnt done it since it did earlier today.
