Default 97 Grand Cherokee starting issue

Last night my G/F got out of work and went to start the Jeep to come home and it wouldn't start. Had power to everything including headlights. It would do absolutely nothing when the key was turned to start position. I took a look at it thinking it was connection at battery but they were all good. I tried crossing the starter with a screwdriver but couldn't get good access to it. (testing to make sure starter still worked) Ended up towing it home last night figuring it was starter solenoid. Bought new starter for it and was getting ready to install it and needed to move the jeep to better spot and turned key all the way to start and it turned over. So I started it up and moved it around shut it off and restarted a number of times.
My question is what would cause this to happen? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

the starter may be on it's way out. got stuck and finally came loose. too bad you didn't have a chance to see if it was getting the 12v while the key was turned while it still wasnt turning over..

Sounds like dirty battery posts to me, especially if your lights dim significantly when you try to crank it.
