Default 97 grand cherokee laredo stock car alarm issues

I recently bought my jeep, and the car alarm worked fine. My unlock/lock key fob works but doesnt lock the drivers side door, which never really bothered me until I was in a bad neighborhood and I used the key to actually lock my front door. The locking mechanism was tighter than usual and I had to put some force into actually turning the key to lock my drivers side door. Now, when I lock my jeep and activate the stock car alarm I can open the drivers side door and nothing happens; no flashing lights no horn honking nothing. Funny thing is the light on top of the dash board that indicates the alarm is on steadily flashes. Ive tried leaving my windows down and activating the car alarm, and simply reaching in to open the door and still nothing. Not gonna lie Ive never had a car alarm before so all this **** is new. Any help would be greatly appriciated!

The lock actuator on the driver's door is probably frozen or disconnected and still in the locked position. This is telling the system that it's locked and isn't. The lock tumbler need to be lubricated as well. You'll have to pull the panel off to correct it.

On my 97 ZJ, the horns were burnt out and the driver's door was not locking either. I could get in and try to start it but the immobilized wouldn't allow it to stay running. Then I'd see the little flashing blue LED and realized I must have squeezed the fob and set the alarm while carrying my keys and other crap. After replacing the horns, I had to deal with the door lock.

Oh! Yeah! Welcome to CF. For the most part, we have a nice community here. It's a forum for spreading the wealth of knowledge gained over the years. Just remember it's an OPINION site so all responses are just that, opinions.

I had the same issue with my zj. It started when I reinstalled the door panel after doing some work. I didnt take it off to fix it, all I did was turning the key back and forth while using the key fob to lock and unlock while holsing the lock still until something seamed to pop back onto place. Works like a charm now

Kind of unorthodox, but hey! It worked!

im not sure if the lock mechanism is bad or if its just the horrible weld job the previous owner did on the top door hinge. it is hard to open and close the door and i think i just dont slam it hard enough to register the doors truly closed.
thanks for the advice everyone!

Sometimes the latch that holds the door, shut sometimes it shifts and will cause too much clearance. Keeping it from double latching. I personally would take out the latch and see if it closes fully with ease. Since you mentioned a possible weld issue. If you take that out and can't hold the door in its fully closed position without a lot of effort then most likely its the hinge. If it does help then I feel it would be easiest if you were to take the panel off and disconnect the linkage rods and set the actuator and manual switch to the unlocked postion and reconnect everything. I think what happend to mine was that the acuator arm and the manual switch linkage weren't in sync.

I'd just like to pass this on. I bought a brand new 81 Chevy Citation and had problems with the door not latching. I took it back to the dealer, and because the door hinges were welded, not bolted, they had to BEND THE DOOR to get it to latch properly! I got the chills about buying another Chevy!

You would think now that Fiat has control, they would be better. Italian engineering is pretty good. Not German by any means.
