I first noticed it was holding first gear to long occasionally. then I went to back out of drv way and it didn't fully engage in revers pulls slightly and drags motor down just briefly when I revved it up it started clicking loudly and stopped when I put in neutral. it goes forward and does not hold rpm when I let off throttle engine goes back to idle in all 4 gears and it starts clicking shortly after fourth gear engages till I push o/d button and it goes back in third

Sounds like the direct-O/D clutch snap ring failure, its pretty common for the snap ring to break into pieces. Another symptom would be to shift it into manual 1st gear and speed up and slow down, if you dont have engine braking its probably broken. Usually pieces of the broken snap ring will fall into the pan so you might want to drop the pan and check.

If this is the problem you can repair it by removing the O/D unit, either rebuild it yourself or have a trans shop go through it. Price around because it should'nt be real expensive.
