96 Jeep Grand Cherokee Won't Start
Things to note;
-Has Power, lights and almost everything turns on -Has started in the past, we drove it to the house -Cranks but doesn't turn over -When we try, the dash beeps 5 times, as if we left the door open, but the doors are closed We think it might be a security issue, like we locked the car with the fob or something. Anything helps! |
Does it seem to start for a few seconds then die? or does it crank but never start at all?
|
It cranks, but never starts.

Does the dash beep 5 times if you already have your seatbelt on? Those 5 beeps are typically associated with the seatbelt warning system. If the seatbelt is already on, it could be the sensor in the seatbelt is not working.
A crank-no-start diagnosis typically starts by determining whether spark, fuel, or air is missing from the startup sequence. Do you have the means for testing whether spark is present? On older Jeeps, the factory security system would typically let the engine start for about 3 seconds and then die (this could be done repeatedly) and it was reset by rotating the ignition key in the driver side door 3 times. This does not sound like what you have described. Though you could try it to see if anything changes. |
The seatbelt beep sounds different from the 5 beeps, and happens before. The car has air and fuel, but no spark. My father thinks a security issue is stopping it from sparking. The driver's side door is unaffected by the key fob, so he thinks its disconnected. If it is, then I don't know if we can even test the reset. I just tried it, and the car still doesn't start.

Starting with the basics, has it been sitting? Is the check engine light on? And are the headlights flashing?
