96 Jeep grand cherokee limited problem
Hey everyone, I've viewed this site for years as I'm a do it yourself'er all repairs on my Jeep. Dont know why I waited so long to sign up but here I am...lol. I changed my power steering pump in my 96 Jeep grand cherokee limited and after installing the belt, still have no power steering or assist...just wondering if anyone has any advice, thanks!

I pressed the pulley on flush with the shaft on pump but the belt kept working its way off so I pressed 1/16" past so its lined up with other pulleys. But I still have no power steering, maybe I got a bad new pump? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated! This is my only vehicle now and I'm out of options...thanks!

It's possible there is a seal blown in the steering box, bypassing pressure, or the pressure regulator you transferred from the old pump was NG.
IDK about the jeep pumps, but when I changed the pump on my Caravan, I had to use the pressure control fitting from the old one. This was contained in the outlet fitting where the pressure hose screwed in. I changed the pump because of a rotted out tank. It's down by the engine oil pan. If you bought one with the pressure valve, I would assume the problem is in the steering box. |
Thanks Dave, I checked the seal, no leaks and I did reuse the old pressure regulator from old pump seems to be fine ...I saw on another thread about bleeding the air out so I jacked it up and slowly turned wheel lock to lock and air was definatly bleeding out, fluid level still good, but when I dropped the jack out steering is still like moving a brick wall. Think they sold me a bad pump!
