96 GC Laredo new front speakers - No sound

Hey guys,
a while back my speakers decided to go out on my stock system.
Was wierd cause at first they went in and out a few times
and if I left the power on the speakers would come on after
a few minutes
---dad just got in a car crash, picking up where I left off---
but it only did this a couple times. Now all I hear is the tweeters
really low. So I bought some cheap 6 1/2's and hooked them
up in the front and I'm getting no sound (cept the tweeters).
My friend looked at the fuses in the front by the passengers side and said
they looked cool. Made sure the wires were correct, only thing
I'm curious about is whether you're suppossed to crimp down the slide on
connectors that attach to the speaker itself.
From the way the speakers went out does anyone have any other
suggestions? I haven't messed w/ the fuses under the hood, not
sure if any of those affect the stereo.
Sorry if this post is a little vague, lost my train of thought after
having to run down the street & stand out in the cold at the scene
of these accident, he's fine btw

<-- good w/ computers/electronics, some car stuff but pretty n00bish
