Default '96 4.0 alternator rebuild?

hey everyone.. it would appear the alternator in my 96 grand cherokee has gone bad.. has the 4.0 engine, laredo package... anyway, battery wont stay charged, it stalls and dies, likely suspect is the alternator which is origional and has never been rebuilt... so, im looking to rebuild it

any source of the required components (brushes/bearings) to rebuild this thing?

It's a lot easier to replace it and only cost about $50

you are probably just looking for the two brushes that go in it (4 in A starter)pos&neg .I have been finding that there are so many aftermarket parts that aren't made here anymore so rebuilding is technically out.I was going to rebuild A master cylinder for my '75 dodge jamboree but the price was down too $20.00 so I just...........

Unless you upgrade the internals for a higher output alternator...

It's still more cost effective just to replace the alternator. You'll spent a bunch of time just trying to find the needed parts...if you can find them.

You can get a 136 alt from a V8 limited for $20 at a PickNPull, cheaper and easier.

i found a post on another forum where someone disassembled their denso alternator and rebuilt it with new bearings and soldered new universal brushes into the cartridge... all things i believe i could do myself.. but im curious now, what exactly is this iceberg upgrade kit?.. whats its purpose and will it work with the standard denso alternator in a 96 grand cherokee 4.0?

for another 20-30 bucks you can get one from Zone or Napa and have a warranty that is close to home and not mail ordered.

the "iceberg" kit is for the old Delco alternators... it'd be easier/cheaper & more beneficial to upgrade to a 136A... tho you'd need to upgrade mains & fuse as well
