Talking 95 Grand Cherokee

Hi all,
Long time Mopar boy, first time Jeep owner. Just bought my 95 cherokee tonight (180k Miles, 4.0 6 cylinder, 4X4, AT, all power, A/C). A few issues I am hoping one of you guru's can help me with.

Heater issue:
Blower does it's thing, but never gets hot... or warm for that matter. Changing settings (Def, vent, ect) does not change a thing.

Warning Center:
There is a message on the warning center (guessing at the name), says rear lamp failure. There is damage to the l/h tail lamp lens, but the exposed bulb is in tact and operational. I will get out more tomorrow in the daylight and check other bulbs and their operation.

Transmission shifting or not:
This is an overdrive trans, but at highway speeds I am unsure that it is shifting into overdrive. At 65 mph, the tach shows 3k rpm. Clicking on and off the o/d button does little or nothing at all to the rpm's.

Any help or guidance is much appreciated.

Welcome to CF from Tenn.! The rear lamp failure means any one of your rear bulbs: License plate, high-mount brake, brake, turn, tail, or reverse light has burned out.
There is a fuse for the TCM in the PDC under the hood. Check that out.

a stuck t-stat is usually the culprit for the no heat issue, the od could be many things, pcm, governor pressure solenoid, worn tranny...if its not a fuse i would check your codes by using the key on/off or a scanner

Thanks for the warm welcome and support guys.

The power of daylight is amazing. The heater core was bypassed, thus the non working condition of the heater. Guess I will be buying a Chilton's.

I removed the damaged taillight and found it half full of water due to the damage in the lens, lol. Dried out the bulbs, and the wiring harness, reinstalled and the messgae is still coming up on the message center. I will go out now and check all the other bulbs and report back.
*Update*
A loose socket on what would be the side marker light was the culprit. New taillight housing ordered : )

I will check fuses first on the trans issue. What should this rig be turning at 65mph, I have no idea on the rear gears?

Thanks again fellas!

Sounds like your rpm is to high. Should be closer to 2000 at 60

The PO must've been too lazy/broke to replace a leaking heater core. Why else would it have been by-passed?
The OD button glows red when engaged. It might not be getting power. With engine running, car in drive, does it light up when pressed?

Seed:
LOL yeah the sneeky sob, let me mess with the controls and didn't say a word. If a deal seems too good to be true and all that

Ol'Blue:
Yes, when running down the road the OD button does light up.

RRam:
I thought so too. Is there anyway to find out what the vehicle came with? It does have a nice tow hitch, looks factory, would that constitute a factory tow packsge? Sorry, like I said, first Jeep

as far as gears go you will have 3:55 with the 4l pretty sure on that. Could be a factory tow package, not real familiar with any options on the 4.0l either. Me I am just a mopar guy that bought a jeep for his wife because it had a 4.7 in it, and in the process found this 93 with a 5.2 kinda cheap so I thought I would get one for me for hunting and playing. These 318s can take a ton of abuse, I like them.

the 4.0 will have the D30/35 axles to determine if you have 3.55's or 3.73's you'll have to find out if the tow package is factory,if you can't do that there should be a tag on your diff that will tell you or you can email jeep at jeep.com for a build sheet, took them like 3 hours to email my build sheet

Might be a bad TCM. If you have access to a known good unit, try it and see if it makes a difference. It's a LOT cheaper than a tranny if that's the problem.

Thanks a lot for the help so far guys.Nice to know, there are good people to help

Heater core issue:
I was poking around today and pulled up the carpet on the pass side and didn't notice any remaining liquid or evidence that the core had leaked. Popped the hood, the hose that was used to bypass the heater core was new, still had the Goodyear parts tag on it. Just got me thinking... The other hose was still attched to the heater core so I blew into it with my thumb over the other side of the core. Nice and easy, and just held the pressure and didn't notice any loss. I installed the hoses back as they should have been and fired the truck up. Heater works, no loss of fluid so far! Why would they have bypassed the core?

Could it have been a bad hose that was being replaced and whoever did it forgot how it went or couldn't figure out how to install it? The vehicle changed hands a couple times (Donated, charity auction, buyer, then me). Anything is possible huh?

Transmission Issue:
I took the Jeep on a 25 mile round trip today to get the DMV satisfied. Of course still reving around 3k at highway speeds. Did noticed the transmission was a lil funny. Up and down shifting at different times. Would the shifting duties primarilty fall to the TCM? I was thinking of servicing the trans, the fluid smelled a bit old. Good idea?

I emailed a request for the build sheet, thanks again for the advice!
