4WD Part Time instrument panel light
On the WJ body style Jeep (Grand Cherokee) - when is this light supposed to come on? I have the Selec-Trac system and it lights up when I'm in 4WD Part Time (as it should) but it does not light up when I'm in 4WD Lo Range. According to a 2004 owner's manual I looked at, it should light up in any mode where the center diff is locked. But my Jeep's a 2002, maybe they didn't enable the light for lo-range at that time. I've only had it for a couple of weeks, and just used lo-range for the first time on a snowy mountain trail yesterday (it worked great, I'm hooked!)
Also, does anyone here know if the ABS is supposed to work when 4WD (part time or lo) is engaged? My friend thought that it wouldn't but it certainly did kick in when I was going down a hill with it in P/T - good thing, too.
Thanks for helping a newbie!

ABS will work all the time no mater the t-case range.
As for the like in the dash could be a few things. Burnt out bulb, or I'd check the plug on the T-case make sure you don't have a broken wire..

I thought it would light up the "part-time" light regardless of whether it was in 4WD Part time, or 4WD Lo - but like you say, if you're in Lo range, it is unmistakeable.
I definitely need more practice on the switching from 4-Hi to 4-Lo, though. The advice I got is that you're supposed to be rolling at about 5 km/h, put the transmission in neutral, and then slide the transfer-case stick from 4-Hi to 4-Lo without pausing in the neutral position... then get the transmission back into drive (or 2 or 1) again before you get rolling too quick. Works great if one manages to time it all correctly... but miss a step and the Jeep's running gear will certainly let you know!
It is amazing to me what a 4x4 is capable of doing, even stock, and I'm looking forward to getting out on the trail again soon.

i always shift into lo when i'm stopped. 4hi can be engaged up to 50mph i believe.
but yeah, i always either push in the clutch (in my tj), or put tranny in neutral in the xj. but always engage 4lo when stopped. but can be engaged while rolling at less than 5mph tho.
