4wd is broken?

Hello fellow jeepers, I know that I'm the wrong place but I didn't know where else to turn to, my brother has the 2006 Jeep Liberty, he texted me today and told me that his 4wd shifter isn't functioning correctly, he said that he can move the 4wd shifter, with just the push of a finger, I'm not a mechanic but I would assume that it's maybe a shifter cable on the transfer case? He also said that his dashboard says its in 4lo but the shifter is on the 4hi position, prior to all of this he said that it was very hard to use the 4wd shifter as if it was stuck, he also said that the jeep can't go to fast, he's only tried going up to 20mph, any input would be greatly appreciated!

Sounds like it's stuck in 4lo with a broken cable. He should crawl under it and move the shift lever on the t/case to the opposite end of it's travel so he can drive it until he gets a new cable. CAUTION!! When it goes thru neutral, it will roll unless it's jacked up, which it should be anyhow so it's easy to shift.

It sounds like the NV247. On my NV242, you have to press down on the shifter to get it to go to low range. He probably just muscled it and broke the cable. When it broke, it snapped into low range.
