Default 4.0 with no oil..

Not mine but my sister in laws

She bought a cheap 95 ZJ w/ 4.0. Ran it for around 2 months and never checked the oil or anything (not even when buying it). She asked me about the engine being loud so I checked her oil. Nothing on the dip stick. Put a quart in and it immediately gets quieter, check the oil again, still nothing on the dipstick, repeat process again and again. Finally when it was all said and done I added 4 qts of oil and it was STILL under the add oil line on the dipstick.

Talk about a heck of a motor, running for 2+ months in 60-85 degree weather with barely (if any) oil. I had to give my bro a hard time as well as he knows better.

Dear Lord. Tell her not to be surprised if she has some bearing issues down the road lol. I swear, sometimes I wonder what would happen to a lady's vehicle if there wasn't a man around to keep an eye on it. It's usually me who checks my mothers fluids, my sisters fluids, many female friends' fluids. Same with a buddy of mine.

There is a man around to do it.. her husband (my brother) but he's too interested in swapping axles and lift kits to do routine maintenance. They've had 3 vehicles die on them in the past 5 years due to no oil...

For example.. he has a 4runner, locked the engine up from lack of oil. Bought a $2500 replacement engine which had a lot of top end noise after only 2 years. I asked when the last time he checked or changed the oil was.. "never".

I don't understand why some people claim to be enthusiasts but don't keep up with routine maintenance. There is more to trucks then lifts and tires..

That sort of thing drives me insane. I check my oil religiously. Next thing on the to-do list is JB weld the pan (small leak) and replace diff fluid. had it done about 5 years ago, but the vehicle was off the road and rarely used for 3, then completely idle for 6 months. she's a tough bird.

The only vehicle that tops the Straight 6 right now was my 1999 Cavalier 2-door. That sucker ran with minimal (possibly no) oil for a week. I intentionally attempted to kill it for some good reasons, initially I hated the car, but after that little run in with no oil I decided to drop some in. best 750 dollar car I've ever owned. lasted me two years and almost no work done to it aside from maintenance.

Turn the key to the "ON" position and see if the oil light comes on. If not check the bulb, then check the sending unit for the light, not the gauge. They're different.
Your brother needs a foot in his ****.

I know I'm an oil change junkie but even if I weren't, this just baffles me when people treat their vehicle that way. Oh well, not my $$$.

You should change it for her, then kick her in her **** for treating her vehicle that way. Tell her it's 3 months OR 3,000 miles between oil changes!
Oil gets contaminated from short trips/diluted with condensation from sitting over time whether the vehicle is driven or not.
There's no excuse for going a year between oil changes. Vehicles break down because people don't maintain them.

I did change it... in fact I'm guessing the reason she asked me to change it was so she could get it done before a 1,500 mile road trip.

That's cool.
I hope there's no issues on the trip.

Default you haven't heard anything yet

so i bought my wife an olds cutlas 98, had a v6 and ran very well. So we got it home (paid 200 bucks) and i checked the oil and wow, it was like vasoline which pissed me off, i called the lady we got it from and asked when the last time she changed the oil, and she said (i kid you not) "my husband says that oil changes are just a way for the oil companies to get more money out of us, so we don't do them." after sputtering and swearing enough to turn the walls of our living room bright blue, i told her that if anything happened to the vehicle in the next 6 months she was buying it back or else i was taking her to small claims court, and she should get her husband a good psych doc cause he had real mental problems. Oil changes have nothing to do with oil companies. you do oil changes to keep the engine wear to a min. So i proceeded with a oil change drove it for a week and did another (i'm not a fan of internal engine cleaners, there hard on the gaskets). Car ran like new until we sold it 4 years later. I can't stand people who won't do the basics and i'm a firm believer that anyone, and i mean anyone regarless of age or sex, who drives a vehicle should have to know how it works, and how to maintain it before they get on the road.

Speaking of basics, it should go without saying that you should CHECK THE OIL before you buy a vehicle, even if the price was only $200. You showed your rear end to this lady for something her husband did when it could have been avoided had you pulled the dipstick before you bought it. Bad form.
