242 swap?? on a zj
Ok so i found a 242 for 175.00 today it's out of a 96 cherokee. I have 96 zj 5.2 with the 249. The assembly date on the 242 is March 96, can I use this as is?? Or will need to split the case and swap input shafts?? Super excited to get rid of that damn 249. any and all comments or references welcomed

swap help?
I'm tryin to do my homework on this swap but I'm startin to feel confused I have a 242 out of a 96 xj with 23 spline input, 27 rear slip, fixed front output yoke, w/ 1.750 speedo hole, one piece tail housing with rubber boot, four wire indicator in speedo housing .840 input which, when I compare these specs to the 249 in my 96 zj they look almost the same, 23 spline input, 27 spline rear slip, viscous clutch, slip rear output, fixed front yoke, shift indicator located above shft lever, 1.750" speedometer hole, .840" exposed input shaft. What I can't find is the input shaft lenght without droppin the case out of my jeep. If anyone can help I would appreicate it. I'm tryin to get this right the first time. i'' new to this "built not bought" idealogy but my knowledge is only so much but you gotta start somewhere, Right?

Your gonna have to drop the 249 to verify the input length.
If the length is different you can still make it work. You'll end up using the 249's front case half with the new 242 rear half and mainshaft iirc. I havent done this yet, but have read a bit.. it's doable.
