Default Picked up a 98 ZJ

I am well educated on XJs as I have had many pass through my hands but this is my first ZJ. Its a 4.0, auto, 2wd Laredo with 186K miles on it. All major components seem to be in good shape for having 186K on the odometer other than needing a quick shot of R134a. Now it’s time to learn about all of the little things I can do to enhance performance and fuel mileage. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Enhance performance and MPG? what are you trying to achieve? Slap a Full CAI and delete the CAT(if your state allows) and she will breathe well. Otherwise, Im sure you know more about the 4.0 than I do. If you have any plans to build it, you already know youre on the right website. Congrats on the new ride.

Nice ZJ, good luck.

That looks like a Limited, not a Laredo.

The common A/C fault is a failed evaporator, leaking the R134a. Mine was caused by vegetation that accumulated against that part, causing corrosion then a leak. Replacing that part is a butt pain, requiring dash removal.

If the bushings and control arms are original, then replacement is required. This reply shows my replacement w/ Moog parts.

If already not performed, then the recall hitch should be added. This reply shows my recall hitch. In the US we get the $100 Recall Hitch VISA Coupon.

Deleting the cat is a federal law and is illegal in all states. Some states my not enforce it or turn a blind eye but it is still illegal.

So far I have found a few issues that need to be addressed before I feel comfortable taking it in road trips. First and most important is a slight noise coming from the rear end, could be the reason it got traded in to begin with. A quick trip to the junk yard and that problem is solved. Second is the headlight/fog light switch is malfunctioning. Again, an easy fix for me.

As for the first upgrade, I have a set of 703 injectors in the garage that never made it into my XJ. Does anyone know of any intake upgrades?

Intake manifold from a WJ (99-04) is larger and more free-flowing. You may have some accessory mounting problem with it. The mounts for the power steering pump are on it and may change the belt length. Some guys move the IAT to the airbox on top of the throttle body making the computer think the incoming air is colder. This enrichens the mixture, but IDK what it does for mpg.

The rear control arms and trackbar are important because you don't have the rigidity of the leaf springs as in the XJ.

My guess is there will be problems when you are seated on the Group W bench w/ the mother rapers and father stabbers.

*ok I see you have the 703s**
Chuck the injectors. 186k miles the filter microscreens are shot. Get some 4 holes. Best money you will ever spend on performance.
In the process take a fine round brass brush and clean out the bores they go into, the little hole it sprays thru gets gunked up, and the brown deposits from gasoline are a bear to get off.
I did chinese ones off ebay , 4 holes, performance is amazing over what it was. $45. That said, the jury is still out as I have a little stumble on cold start and a LTFT of -10. But quality bosch refurbs or new are around 150.
She sure is a pretty looker ...nice find.!!

CEL came on last week and pulled 2 codes. P0118 for the coolant temp sensor and P0351 for ignition coil primary circuit. The wife said the temp gauge keeps dropping to 100 while driving. Went to the parts store and picked a new temp sensor since that in itself malfunctioning can cause other issues. I go to unplug the sensor to replace it and the damn connector clip is broken so the plug was not making good connection. Used a coupe of tie wraps to keep it in place and no issues so far. Good thing I haven't installed the new sensor yet, now I can return it.

IDK how "standard" that connector is, but I can still get connector plugs for my 2000 WJ from a dealer. They most times need to order them, but they are still available. I just had to get one for my NSS.
