2004 Overland AWD

Hello All and Merry Christmas to everyone.
I am new here and also new to owning a Jeep. I recently bought this 04 Overland and am wondering if someone can explain to me how the AWD works. I am no stranger to 4x4 , but have always had 2 wheel / 4 high
and 4 low . with the jeep I always feel the 4x4 in the front it seems... if that makes sense. Backing out of my drive i can feel the front end pawing. Is this normal ? Please help me understand how it works.
Thanks .
FROM THE HILLS OF EAST TENNESSEE.:santa:

I believe that is the NV/147 which was only used in 2004.

Do a quick Google search wjjeeps.com lots of info and it had a section that will explain the differences of the wj 4wd systems. I have a 02 overland with Quadra drive it was nice to have when up in the mountains but will more then likely swap the tcase for a 242 so I can run 2wd.

Okay, here's the result of some research I've done on WJ NV242 transfer cases.

The NV242j comes in 2 versions, the 242LD which is found in the 4.0s, and the 242HD which is found in the 4.7s. The LD uses an external splined output shaft slip joint with a rubber boot covering the shaft. The HD uses a slip joint in an aluminum tail housing. The "j" designation means it doesn't have the speed sensor port in the t/case. It was moved internally to the transmission.

The 242HD for the 4.7 uses a larger, longer input shaft than the 242LD with a different spline count. I've lost my data, but I believe the output shafts are different spline size also. I DO know the input yoke on the D44 rear diff uses a larger u-joint than the D35, so I'm assuming the output shaft is smaller on the 242LD.

It gets confusing when trying to find the right case in the junkyard so I hope this helps.

ALSO, if you should decide to change the shifter bezel, It is a one piece plate with the transmission bezel and is a "lighted membrane" which shouldn't be flexed. The hardest part in removing it is taking the shift knobs off. It is spring loaded under the console top.
