2004 Grand Cherokee Laredo (4.0) AC bypass
 

Have a locked up ac compressor. The belt diagram under the hood shows an option for "no AC" belt routing but cant seem to find any info on belt length. Hoping just a quick temp fix to get me through a couple weeks. Thanks for any info.

Have you tried the different routing with your existing belt? Seems to me that if I was designing an off road vehicle and provided alternate routing I would try to work it out so that a disabled compressor didn't leave someone stranded in the middle of the desert. I'm driving the same vehicle and I'll have a look at mine tomorrow.

My best solution is to go to an auto parts store (a good one) and see if they have a listing for a no-AC belt. You may have to remove the compressor for clearance.

I ended up determining it was a 75" 6 rib belt on my 04', 13" shorter than routing with AC. I used a Duralast 750K6 ($23 at Autozone) and everything working fine routed as shown on the sticker above the radiator for "No AC". I heard comments that defrost depends on AC compressor, seems to be working fine and plenty of heat on dash.

Mom is back home, she has developed a bleeding ulcer and has an appointment tomorrow morning with a specialist. She is still pretty active for her age, about the same as your mom, but has had a lot of health problems the last few years. thanks for your concern and glad you got the belt situation sorted out.

No, defrost does not rely on the A/C compressor. It runs in defrost just to keep the system active over the winter. Older GM vehicles had to be recharged every spring because the system would leak down. They cured the problem of the seals leaking by having the compressor run any time the defroster was on.

The A/C hasn't worked in my WJ for 5 years, yet my defroster works fine. It needs an evaporator and I'm not tearing the dash apart. I have 4-60 air conditioning. 4 windows down, 60 mph!
