Default 2002 Grand Cherokee question?

I'm getting a weird (rub/grind) noise sometimes when i turn left or right. This happens at low speeds in reverse and drive. The Cherokee has the Quadra Drive system. Any thoughts, cause i'm getting nervous driving it around this way....

If it only does it on full-lock slow turns it could be the tires rubbing on the control arms. JMO

Is this the transfer case that has the viscous coupling that sometimes goes out?

It only does it in 4-HI. I tried in Lo and no noise.

No,the 247 doesn't have a VC.

Does it make the noise while the jeep is stationary and you turn the wheel? If so you could have someone turn the wheel while you try and pinpoint the origin.

Nope, it only makes the noise when the trucks in motion. The sound is like the back tires are rubbing against the wheel wells or there is something stuck in the wheel wells when I turn left or right. I know there is nothing stuck or rubbing.

Go to a parking lot where there is lots of room. When you hear the noise, stop the Jeep and look at the front tires and see if they are rubbing on the control arms on the inside. You will see a spot rubbed clean if so. That's my guess.

Like blue said, check for signs of contact,a spot rubbed clean somewhere.
I had a rubbing noise from the rear once like that, turned out my lugs were loose. Are you sure it's coming from the rear?

Kinda hard to diagnose what you're describing over the internet,is it real loud? can you feel it or just hear it?

There is no rubbing from what I can see. It is hard to describe the sound. Some days it does it and some days it doesn't. Like I said I tried it in 4lo and not a peep of sound. I changed the diff fluid, tranny fluid, Motor oil and the only thing left is the Tcase. I will have to get the fluid from the dodge dealership cause it calls for Mopar Transfer Case Fluid or equivalent. I was wondering what would be the equivalent? It is loud in the cab of the truck, but not outside.

Does it have the limited-slip rear diff?

Could that be the source of the noise?

I was thinking maybe, until he/she said it's loud in the cab but not out.

I would think it would be quite audible from outside the cab as well, right?

Loud in but not out points to something coming in contact with the body IMO

Yeah I agree. A closer inspection would have to show where the rubbing is happening. Maybe the alignment is off enough to allow the tire to rub the LCA. That happened on my ZJ. In 4-Lo there is enough torque pulling the tire forward that it doesn't rub. It might be different on a WJ though.
