2002 4.0 Fuel Rail Leak
I tried to use search function but cant find my answer. I have a 2002 Grand with a 4.0. There is gas dripping out of what appears to be a fuel damper or damener on the fuel rail. Kind of looks like a silver circle like a fuel regulator?
Thoughts?

It's dripping from this. I have heard people call it a fuel damper. But I cant find it for sale anywhere. I wonder if it has o rings or something I can replace?
Or how I can remove it to check, it just has those little metal tangs.

I will hang on for any help for a few more days if I can... I may make a trip to the junk yard for a fuel rail tomorrow if I don't hear anything.
Hard to believe I have found this problem with a few folks but no answers. I just thought with as many 4.0's out there and Jeep guys being hands on I would have a better time seeing what this thing is and how to fix or replace without doing the entire rail...
Thanks, I will keep trying....

Engine: 4.7L Petrol/Gas
The following is a cut & paste from my Cherokee workshop manual – the only words that should interest you is the last sentence.
'FUEL INJECTOR RAIL/FUEL DAMPER—4.0L
ENGINE
DESCRIPTION
The fuel injector rail is used to mount the fuel
injectors to the engine (Fig. 5). On the 4.0L 6–cylinder
engine, a fuel damper is located near the center
of the fuel rail (Fig. 5).
OPERATION
The fuel injector rail supplies the necessary fuel to
each individual fuel injector.
High pressure fuel from the fuel pump is routed to
the fuel rail. The fuel rail then supplies the necessary
fuel to each individual fuel injector.
The fuel damper is used only to help control fuel
pressure pulsations. These pulsations are the result
of the firing of the fuel injectors. It is not used as a
fuel pressure regulator. The fuel pressure regulator is
not mounted to the fuel rail on any engine. It is
located near the front of the fuel tank above the rear
axle. Refer to Fuel Filter/Fuel Pressure Regulator in
this group for information.
A fuel pressure test port is located on the fuel rail
(Fig. 5). A quick-connect fitting with a safety latch is
used to attach the fuel line to the fuel rail.
The fuel rail is not repairable.'

Scrap It!
Pull it off and find something suitable to plug it off. I used 3/4 fuel line hose, clamps and a metal plug. It hasn't made any notable difference in engine performance and doesn't set off any check engine light(s).

I have a 2004 GCL and had this exact same issue two months ago. Cap was damaged when fuel injector across from it was replaced. The leak became worse so I had to replace the entire rail.

Old fart with a wrench
I think the whole reason for this compensator is some engineer trying to justify his existence. Jeeps have used fuel injection for how long? Fuel pressure pulsations happen so quickly I can't see how it matters. Injectors fire 3 times every revolution, each injector every other revolution, and the pressure change can't be enough to cause oscillations in the fuel delivery to disrupt mixture strength or crack the welds in the fuel rail. The volume of fuel injected each time can't be enough to starve the rear injectors either.
I honestly don't see the need for it.

My 95 didn't have the dampener, but I installed a rail from a 2001 XJ when I did my intake swap that has the dampener. I couldn't tell you if there is a difference in how the engine runs with or without it. I think Dave is right, it's just survival engineering, got to keep building a better mousetrap to give the illusion that they're needed.
