Default 42 RE transmission in a 2WD

Hello out there - does anyone know if I can use a 42RE automatic transmission from a 4WD on a 2WD? The tranny on my 97 2WD blew, itīs a 4.0/6cyl.
Iīm out here in Germany and itīs very difficult to come by a 2WD 42RE - however, there are a bunch of guys selling 42REīs from 4WD. Wondering if that could be a fit. Any help or comment would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, you can lug a t/case around for nothing if you want. Just don't use a 249, make sure it's a 242 and lock it in 2wd. You'll need a shorter driveshaft also. Actually, I don't think a 249 would be a problem either except your parking brake has to work then because it will creep in park otherwise. If the donor jeep has a different gear ratio, you can use the speedo gear from yours.

If all you're getting is the transmission without the t/case, you'll have to change the O/D unit to yours. It simply unbolts from the rear of the transmission. If you do that, loosen the bolts a little at a time. There is a 600lb spring held in place with a snap ring and if the ring has broken, that spring will fly apart when taking out the bolts. There is a safe way to handle that problem should it occur, but we'll get into that if necessary.

If there's still pressure on the bolts after loosening them 1/4", stop!

There is a park lock link rod that needs to be disconnected at the shift quadrant inside the pan before you remove the O/D unit. If you find that broken snap ring in the pan, be forewarned.

I have thought about this several times Dave. And know what? Having a low range wouldn't be a bad thing in some conditions and maybe even a great advantage even in a two wheel drive.

Ya know, you're right! I never thought about it, but low range would be great for pulling a heavy trailer on dirt roads or up a steep hill. Low range is part time so not having a front drive axle shouldn't matter. Smart thinking!

Okay LAmike, you'll need the shifter too! That is if you're getting the t/case also.

In reference to that PM I just sent you, it's probably easiest to just get the transfer case as well. If the source has the rear driveshaft and shifter, that would be great! You'll have your jeep back on the road in no time!

You'd have the only 2wd jeep with a low range! Keep us informed! We love feedback!
