2001 4.0 engine advice needed
Newbie here so please excuse my ignorance!
The wife's 2001 Jeep grand Cherokee limited with the 4.0 inline 6cyl with 200k plus miles has developed a very nasty and very loud knock. I believe it is coming from the lower end. From what I read it is probably a piston skirt that has cracked and is in it's death throws.
The body and leather interior are in excellent shape so we are considering keeping the jeep and repairing it. So what are my most cost effective options and who are the most reputable vendors for parts. I don't want to go with a used engine since there is a potential for the same problems and local prices for used engines make it an expensive gamble. Thanks for any help you can give!

I certainly would not go broke trying to fix it..... On a good day the whole thing is worth $2500.

In my opinion, you have to decide what your objectives are. 1) Is your wife in love with this vehicle? 2) Do I have the money to do this myself or to have it done? 3) What will I have when it's done? 4) Can I afford to replace the vehicle?
Admittedly, A rebuilt engine won't add much to the resale value. It 200K, you should go for a total rebuild if you want a lot more life out of it. A used engine is not an option unless it's from a low mileage wreck.
You have to look at it and ask yourself, do you want to put a lot of money into it? Remember, it's 12 years old and the rest of the systems are tired. Transmission, axles, transfer case, wheel bearings, suspension, etc will become problems also.
P.S. One the other hand, I bought a 2000 with 128K on it with immaculate service records and feel it will last me a while. ANY used vehicle is a crap shoot. Not to say a new one isn't.
I gave you my opinion. The decision is yours.
