2000 Grand Cherokee - 4wd shifter "floppy"
Morning Gang!
I need a little help from those that have "been there, done that". My 4WD shifter is floppy and will not engage the 4WD. I have the console mostly off (can' t get that damn regular shifter **** off of its shaft! ) and I see some bits of plastic in there already.
My question is this. Is it a "clip" of some sort connecting the shifter and the linkage? Or do I need a whole new bezel, shifter unit, etc? I dig search here and tried several google searches, but can't see if it's a distinct part or part of the entire unit.
Thanks in advance for the help!

I think I checked at the tranny when I first discovered the problem, but now you have me wondering. I will crawl under it when I get home. The reason I took console apart is that there is ZERO tension on the shift lever at all. Thanks.

Common issue with the WJ. As mentioned, it is most likely the shift bushing that connects shift cable to tab on transfer case. Crawl under jeep and look next to where the front driveshaft connects to transfer case. There is the shift tab that cable should attach to. The bushing gets brittle, breaks and then the cable slips off shift tab.
The WJ does not use the z-linkage that the ZJ and XJ use. Just one shift bushing for the WJ.
