Default 2000 Gr Jeep Cherokee will not start in 1st gear

Hello,

Hopefully someone will be able to answer the issue I am having. I appreciate your time for replying & giving any advice.

2000 Grand Cherokee / Automatice/ 2 whell drive / 6 cyl / 130k

The problem: I noticed 2 days ago when I would start out in drive - it was just not really moving like it was / felt like the brakes were on holding it. it would after about 2-3 second go into gear - I assume second - and drive. Nothing has changed in the last few days so I went to a service center to have them look at it Goodyear - (note- I have had a few things done hear at a reasonable price - thought I would have them look at it as I needed an oil change as well) - they called me and said this was the problem:

The car was not starting out in first gear. It was going into second (the hesitation). They said it was ok to start out in first gear - that worked fine - but it was a major transmission problem.

Their solution: A rebuilt or new transmission.

Cost quoted: 2,500 - 3,500 price range.

I have taken care of this vehicle and understand things go wrong - I was hoping that I could get other possiblities of fixing this issue - maybe sensors.or somthing easy? I am not a mechanic and will have to have someone work on this from the begiing to the end.

Anyone that can help me on this issue - I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you,

keh - frisco, tx

FYI If you're going to have the trans rebuilt for between $2500-3500, keep in mind the dealer will install a complete new unit w/ 3 - 36 warranty for around $2400.

Default Thanks

ol"blue,

I appreciate the advice if it comes down to having to rebuid the transmission regarding the warranty & price.

Hopefully it will not come down to that and someone can give me options to check before I take it in for a rebuild.

Thanks and have a great day!

Take it to a good tranny shop and have them test it. My experience with goodyear is they may be able to change a tire or possible oil. It could be a simple silenoid. Tranny shops have pretty good diagostic tools and can monitor exaxtly what the trans is doing while driving. Be worth a shot.

Default Thank you for tip

RRAM,

Appreciate the tip on the silenoed. I have been researching transmission shops around me to get some answers, reviews for when I take it in to be tested / diagnosed.

I just want to be as knowledgeable on what might go wrong / can be corrected first before I go in; your answer helped.

Hopefully I will get several other suggestions on what to look for - to do before I go to the shop to have it tested.

Best,

keh

Check the PDC under the hood. Numbers 5 and 31 power the Transmission Control Module, which helps control shifting points and RPMs

I have a 1998 Grand Cherokee Liminted. Their is a vibration on the front wheels and the steering wheel shakes. Had it allined and tires ballenced.Everthing is stock.Put new pads and callipers on back.
Also, the sun roof will not open. Don't know where the fuse is for this or could it be something else?
What could my problems be?
The shaking just happens at about 50mph, plus or minus (1)mph...

Sunroof is controlled by the Sunroof Module in overhead console, part of sunroof assy.. See #13 in diagram above.
