Okay, so we found a thread on another forum with instructions on replacing the fan relay, only it turned out it was for a 4.0 not a 4.7. Can anyone be specific about where to find this relay? We have the book, but it's simply not clear. We tested the fan and it works, so it's the relay that's bad. Thanks for any help!!

Behind and below the passenger headlight I think. Should be a black plastic piece with a blue sticker on it.

Somewhere on the forum there is a link that shows you how to cut a hole in the headlight support to get to it.

Welcome to CF.
According to the info I can find, the early 4.7L equipped WJ's only had the electric cooling fans if they were equipped with the trailer package. The relay is in the same place as for the 4.0L's, and here's an easy way to access it. >->JeepsLimited.com - Fan Relay Removal and Replacement (WJ)
The non tow package V8's only came w/a belt driven clutch fan.

Thanks so much for the responses. We DO have the tow package. Already looked in the passenger headlight, but did not cut anything out, not before verifying that it was in the same place as the 4.0L. Looks like I'll need to do that. Appreciate the help and link. Will post the results in case anyone else runs across the same problem.
