Default 1999 Grand Cherokee, ignition want turn

This is the first time anything like this has happened. It has never acted like it w didn't want to turn. The steering wheel is not locked. The tires will turn as far as you can turn them. That is with the key out. It is the same key as always and have tried the courtesy key and spare and all do nothing. When you put the key in it simply wont turn either way. Praying for an easy fix.

Thanks ahead to any and all that help.

Sounds like your tranny isn't all the way in park. Maybe linkage?

Methinks the lock cylinder is broken. It's possible you have a hung up tumbler in the lock. Try shooting it with WD40 and inserting the key several times. I KNOW! you shouldn't use anything but graphite in a lock, but trust me, it works.

If the trans isn't in Park, it won't start, but the shouldn't stop the key from turning.

My 2000 WJ steering doesn't lock, although it might be it's supposed to.

I had a similar problem with my 2000 WJ – take a look at the responses in that thread, posted 2 years ago:-

I sprayed it with wd-40 and tried it again and still nothing. Someone had recommended popping the key with something while it is inserted in the switch. I used a rubber mallet. For the next 3-4 times I tried to start it I had to give it a little pop. Since then it acts like it is brand new. Thanks to everyone that helped.

One of your lock tumbler pins has a burr on it. By whacking it, you popped it up enough to free it and it will probably be okay.
