1998 grand cherokee laredo
I'm looking at 98 grand Cherokee in the local bargain finders and this is the listing:
1998 grand Cherokee Laredo sport for parts newly rebuilt transmission, new computer new crank sensor make offer. I called about it and the owner said that the engine cuts out while driving. What I am wondering is what could the problem be. She also said that she had took off the catalitic converter to get extra money could that cause the problem? And the offer is 700 bucks. Would it be worth my time and effort to buy and fix it or a waste of time? Thanks

Could just need a complete tune up or a cam sensor, no telling without looking at it. But the catalytic converter will cost around 300 bucks.

I would buy it, but I'm a mechanic that likes to have a project to work on. The transmission in that ZJ probly cost 2500 bucks to have rebuilt. But the fact she sold the cat conv for some extra scratch has me wondering about what else she may have parted out.

The '98 was the last year for the ZJ and an odd ball because you can't check the codes using the ignition key, so you should take a scanner if you have access to one. They had more than their share of electrical issues, compared to other years, so keep that in mind. They may have simply installed the wrong PCM. Could also be something simple like a bad ground.
If it's in decent shape you can more than get your money back in parts even if you can't fix any problems it has.
