1997 Grand Cherokee Limited Rear End Clunking

i have recently purchased a 1997 grand cherokee limited with 146k miles, when i go over bumps, for example, going down my drive way, there is a clunking noise, if doesnt make that clunk when i go up the driveway, just down. the shocks are fairly new, so i know its not the shocks. what else could this be? and its not the rear hatch either. Thanks in advance for the help

When did the noise start. Did you hear it before the shocks. What about driving down the street, do you hear it. And is it just a. Clunk or a clunk with any type of vibration or rattling after it?

It's just a clunk. No rattle after it. No vibration. And it doesn't clunk while going down the highway.

My guess would be the U joints are going bad. There are 2 or 3 in the rear (I forget). Have somebody get under and check out for any play or worn out u joints.

Check for loose or worn out control arm bushings.

Lose anything really. Bad bushings cam bolts, sway bar links, ujoints etc. Make sure your exhaust isn't banging on anything as well.

Good catch! My ZJ's tailpipe was banging on the fuel tank shield. It took me a while to find that one.
