i have a 1997 grand cherokee limited with 130,000 miles, it has been very cold where i live but i have never had this problem before....i went out to start my car this morning and it turns over fine, it just does not stay running unless i give it gas...i also left it with hardly any gas in it that night

You don't say what engine you have but from driving dodges all my life I have had a few 5.2s. they will flood when its cold.
When its cold the computer dumps a lot of raw fuel in the engine to get it fired up, just like when we had carbs and chokes. close the air off, and give it raw fuel to fire on. problem is if your plugs and wires are not the best shape (could be other reasons) and it can't burn the fuel off they run like crap till they warm up a bit. Sometime holding your foot in it and give it air willbe enough to burn it off so it will idle again.
Always better to keep fuel in these newer vehicles with intank pumps as well, try to get in the habit of calling 1/4 tank empty and putting fuel in a bit sooner, should help in the life of the pump as it should not run dry or cavatate.
