Default 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Air bags deployed

I have a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Recently during a bunch of reckless off-roading in the desert I managed to clip a rock when I had mud all over the wind shield. This was a fairly large rock and to my shock both air bags deployed in my face. I guess it crushed the sensor or the G Force was enough to initiate the cascade of events. The majority of the damage was the bumper and slight damage to the radiator. Anyways my jeep managed to still start up fine and now I have both air bags deployed. I cut them out and have not driven my Jeep since.

I have a few questions regarding the mechanics behind the air bags in this model. I can care less about replacing the air bags. I do not have much money and want to just drive as is. Does the air bags deployed have anything to do with the computer system. As in will I need to reset the air bags to drive again? Would it still drive with air bags deployed? If not is their something I can do to bypass the airbags (fuse/relay/computer)?

This really sucks because I just finished college and now I don't have a vehicle!

You may have an air bag light on, but it will not effect the way the engine runs. When the passenger side air bag goes off it usually tears the dashboard all to hell. The tops of the doors tend to get blown out too unless the windows were open.

Just hit up a junk yard and snag the airbags, clock spring, control module, & impact sensor when you have time and swap yours out. Other than that there will be no drive issues because of that.

Ok thanks glad to know it doesn't prevent the car from running. I thought maybe it would have a kill switch type mechanism that ran on a clock or something. Your right all that I can see is that the airbag light is on.

- Yeah the damage is noticeable but really didn't do much but blow the part that the airbag came out of. The rest of the inside is fine: windows, door, and all that.

- I'll probably look into pick a part or possibly order online.

If you don't need them for inspection, Just mount JY units and take the bulb out of the warning light, lol!. The problem is a lot of them in P&P are popped already. I think they do it intentionally. I think that because most times the front end sheetmetal is still good.
