1996 grand cherokee 4X4 tranny bell house noise
I have 1996 Grand cherokee Lerado 4x4 4.0 6 cyl. I bought it a week ago. When it is in park there is a light gear grind or pulsating noise that comes from in between the transmission and the engine I guess the bell house is where its coming fromI think the flywheel and torque converter are in this area Could it be the flywheel or torque converter . This same noise also comes when I am going over 45mph. Does anyone have advice on what it could be or had this problem. I'm sorry its hard to describe the noise.

With a piece of dowel, like 1/2 a wooden broom handle, or maybe a tube/hose or piece of pipe to your ear listen around to see if you can find better the source of the noise. Knocking/rattling from the bell-housing can be loose torque-plate to torque converter bolts. Welcome! And good luck.

rattling noise
I listened with a piece wood. and at a closer listen its like a pulsating rattle. right at the beginning of the bellhouse. I don't have any idea of what is behind the bell house but, the noise is not in the tranny far as I can tell. Is this tranny difficult to pull? I am a basic part changer type mechanic and never did it professionally.

I had the same problem with a 97 GC that I just bought.Try pulling off the access cover off on the bottom of the bellhousing.See if you can see aluminum dust on or around the torque converter bolts heads where they may be rubbing the bellhousing.First make sure the bolts are tight.Mine had aluminum dust around them and I could see where they were rubbing the bellhousing but I had a hard time seeing where they were rubbing or why.I then pulled the starter out.The hole in the bellhousing that the starter goes in it a tight fit.On mine the bellhousing hole was alittle bent up and the starter wasn't seating properly in it and the starter was pushing the bellhousing in just enough to rub the bolts.I just took my rotozip and filed the bellhousing just enough for the starter to seat in it properly. You could used a round file also.Problem solved!!!Hope this helps
