After 259,000 the fuel pump seem to have gone all at once.
No pressure at the rail.
Fuse is good and swapped the fuel pump breaker with no results.
The 4.0 turns over but the plugs are dry.

Of course I just filled the gas tank up.

I was attempting to siphon the gas out of the Jeep and into my 86 Caprice. But for whatever reason I can not get a siphon to work. I have tried a couple different sizes of hoses and I can get the tip wet with gas but that's it.

In my 86 Caprice I can run a garden hose right to the bottom of the tank.

Do I have to drop down to 1/4" hose to siphon the gas out of the jeep? Any suggestions?

Never done on a grand. Can you access the pump from behind the rear axle?

have you tried jumping the fuel pump directly? Just to be sure it's not another electrical issue somewhere.

The Jeep run fine all day Sunday, park in driveway as always and Monday morning it just went all at once. In the past the pressure at the rail was 49 lbs and the fuel drop of after turning key off was in spec. The o rings on injectors were replaced couple of years ago.

About 3 years ago I did replace the crank positioning sensor. Fuel filter was changed less than 2 years ago.

In the fuse box the mini 20 amp fuse is good, and I swapped the breaker with another one in the fuse box that is good and it didn't make a difference.

I have always heard the fuel pump prime and it no longer does that. There is absolutely no pressure on the rail. Check with just my finger and then put a fuel pressure gauge after it was towed home and the needle didn't move.

I have not tried to jump the fuel pump directly. Wasn't sure I could without dropping the tank? Suggestions?

I bought a new fuel filter and new Delphi fuel pump assembly. I can't get any gas to siphon out and it is frustratingly delaying. Suggestions?

I think most newer vehicles have a screen or something to stop siphoning. Could be wrong but I swear I've heard that.

Thanks for the suggestion. I did happen to try that one out last night. The hose hits a stopping point and only gets the tip wet. Err...

Have you tried sticking your hand up behind the rear axle on the front of the tank?

You may be able to access the fuel pump from there.

I had the same problem on a Dodge Caravan. I had to lower the tank on a piece of 3/4 plywood on my floor jack, then get to the pump. That didn't have an anti-siphon baffle in it. I just wanted to check/change the pump.

Reaching above the rear axle does not provide enough space to access the fuel pump. I did look.

I have given up on trying to siphon the gas out. I will drop the tank with it being full. Then try to get the full tank on the trunk of my Chevy so I can drain the tank and hopefully clean it out.

Something interesting though. I hit the bottom of the fuel tank with my hand a few times. Then the fuel pump would prime one time. usually it seems to prime with every turn of the key. So I hit the bottom of the tank and checked to see if it would prime. would only prime once and then would not prime again. About the 3rd time of this I heard it prime and the engine started to fire. So I am guessing the sock filter is terribly dirty?

Or a bad connection in the wiring or sending unit.

Once you get it out, check the connections to the pump itself from the mounting flange. I've heard of them beings loose before, which is scary because a spark inside the tank makes it a bomb!

Got the full tank out and siphoned the gas to other cars. Clean the tank out real good. New Fuel Filter, other one was 4 years old, had to buy new tank straps since the others were rusted too bad. put 5 gallons of gas in tank and primed the new fuel pump a couple of times and started right up. Filled up the rest of the tank and no issues. I check the pressure at the fuel rail and was 49 lbs and leak down was good.

Glad to see you got 'er fixed up...and that stinks about the HF pump not fitting down into the tank. I wonder if XJ tanks are the same way?
