1995 Jeep GC All Time 4x4 vs Full Time
Hello Jeep lovers, I am considering buying a 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee. It's a V8 5.2L, it's a 4x4 all time. does this mean that it's on all the time? is there a way to turn that off?

Yup, that's the Quadratrac 249 transfer case. The Selectrac 242 and 231 transfer cases allow you to use 2WD.
Don't be under the assumption that 2WD will save you gas. It won't because you'll still be turning all those gears in the front axle anyhow. Also, the AWD will give you the added security of traction on any road surfaces and conditions.
Just make sure before you buy it that it doesn't have a bad viscous clutch in it. You can test it by turning it in circles and feel if the front wheels are rolling smoothly and not jerking or binding. The viscous clutch is expensive to replace, so much so that people with a bad one often change the t/case to something else. Replacing it requires taking the t/case out and splitting it open.
I'm not trying to frighten you. I merely trying to warn you about potential problems. The 249 is a good drive system if properly maintained.
