1995 Grand Cherokee Stock Radio Cuts Out

Hi, I recently bought a 1995 Grand Cherokee and I'm trying to figure out where to start on diagnosing a radio issue on it. It has the Infinity Gold CD radio installed and it'll power up fine, but after a few moments to a few minutes of being on, all sound cuts out except for a pop from the right side speakers occasionally. If I restart it, the sound will usually come back for another couple of moments.

I know the previous owner tried replacing the radio with another unit he pulled from another jeep and he tried replacing the amp underneath the rear seat with a couple of units with no success. I will mention the the front controls are a little sporadic, I'm guessing possibly from a bad cap or something, but it appears to still be receiving radio stations when the sound goes out and I can still change stations normally when the sound goes out.

I did get the radio and two amps the previous owner tried and I have tried replacing the amp with one in the pile that was rebuilt professionally just to see for myself and it didn't appear to do anything to fix the issue. I haven't tried popping out the radio yet and trying the other unit, but I'd imagine it wouldn't do anything since the previous owner said he tried it. I'm not really sure if this other radio would've ever worked in this car though as it doesn't appear to be an infinity gold radio and I'm not sure if it would be able to work with the infinity gold amp.

I'm not 100% sure if this is a radio or wiring issue, I'm pretty confident the amp is fine though. I'm also not really sure if anybody has had a radio problem quite like this before, I cant find any posts anywhere on it. If it is actually a radio issue, does anybody know what usually goes wrong inside these infinity gold units and if they can be fixed? I really don't want to install an aftermarket set in it as I like the stock look of the interior. Thanks.

When I bought my 97, the PO had bypassed the amp so I was just running on the radio output and it was plenty loud for me. The amp was smoked, crispy critters!

Check to make sure none of the wiring was spliced, and if it was, make sure it's secure. Otherwise you'll want to bypass the factory amp, or else test the stock radio or have it tested at a car audio shop to make sure nothing's blown, as you think, because it may be.

You won't want to go around searching for another stock radio to put in, as they're more expensive if you want a guaranteed tested, working, even refurbished unit, and an aftermarket radio is very easy to install. :)

Good luck!

Ended up picking up a pioneer deh-435 at the thrift store about a month or two ago and that did the charm. Sorry for the late update!

Thanks for an update at all! Most times we don't even get that.
