1995 grand cherokee laredo
i have a 95 grand cherokee laredo, when i get in in the mornings turn the key over it just clicks, hit it again starts up… at first i thought it was the battery but its good, next i checked the starter but its good… while its running the tach does not work and when i rev the motor it comes up and right back to zero… while driving the tach acts erratic and jumps all over the place and it feels like its losing power but never shuts off. seems to be running great. as i drive a long distance the problem seems to go away. please help. its like its not getting voltage or something….

Sounds similar to my problem on my 97. Turn key once, no start. Turn key twice, starts up. My ZJ does not jump all over or feel like it's losing power but runs fine until shut off. I'm stumped too. Check out my thread right after yours.

I would start checking fuses and relays related. I'm no expert but it also could be related to the connection between the ignition and the starter.

You may have a loose ground wire at your battery terminal as well as needing a new rotor and cap. I had to change out my cap and rotor as well as changing out the ground wire terminal. Don't forget to check the plugs. They may need replacing as well. I use the new platinum plugs on my jeeps with good results.
What kind of gasoline have you been using lately? Up here in Ohio the gas is all crap regardless of what grade you buy. I use Lucas fuel treatment to clean out the fuel injectors. You just may need to clean out the fuel injectors with something like this product.

Old fart with a wrench
It's not just the ground wire. Most likely it's the positive (+) battery cable clamp. The lead terminal stretches and looses contact with the battery post. It may feel tight, but isn't. When you hit the key the first time, the lead melts and forms a good contact. The second time, you get enough current flow to crank the starter. Replace the cable end with a cadmium-plated steel one.
