Default 1994 grand cherokee limited

This jeep seems to be in 4wd all the time, Even on asphalt. I find it hard to believe it should be like this? Can someone tell me this is wrong or right. On the floor the only option I have is 4all the time N or 4Lo. Can some let me know if it should be limited slip or what? Thanks

That's because it's equipped with Quadratrac transfer case, and it's AWD. It perhaps has a limited slip, but it was an option that had to be put on it at the dealership.

What makes it sound like this? Tires squeeling, tires hopping on tight turns? Most likely you need a transfer case, you have a np249, very common problem for the viscous coupler to go bad.

Thanks so much, after I posted that I found someone else's post about that. How long do you think it will last driving it like this?

It'll last almost forever like that. The viscous coupling that's bad will cause the symptoms listed, as well as being harder on your tires. Other than that, you can continue to drive it as is, swap transfer cases to a 242/231, or replace the viscous coupling in the 249 transfer case.

Most people don't fix the 249's, as the viscous coupling alone is a $3-400 part alone, not to mention the seals and bearings you'd replace at the same time.

That's cool, it will give my son some time to save and find a new case, after all it was given to him (jeep) that is. I used to have a wrangler and now I'm falling in love with thing due to the v8 and 4 doors. Thanks again to all.
