1993 ZJ w np249 wont move with front drive shaft removed?
Hey guys, Im the new owner of a 93 ZJ with the np249 tc.
I pulled the front ds due to it needing new u-joints and new centering yoke. After I removed the ds I wanted to take a spin around the block to verify this was the only thing causing the clunk/chirp. Anyways, put her in drive and the speedo went up but did not go forward. Put her in reverse and she moved? Is that normal? I understand not to drive this particular model with the front ds removed. Just curious why it moved in reverse and not drive? Id appreciate any help!!! :euro: |
That is normal for the NP249 of that vintage. You will destroy the viscous coupler in the transfercase if you drive without the front shaft, you will also not have PARK.

Fix your DS and re install. Took me bout an hour and change to do mines. Caps didn't wanna bang loose |
Thanks guys. I will fix it next week some time. This jeep is not my daily driver. I won't move it until that's fixed.
It's still strange that it won't even move in drive. Is this because the tc is trying to send power to the front only? Thanks |
