No, I haven't had time to mess with it. Apparently, the pin keeps coming out because the tranny is moving, possibly due to worn trans mounts. This linkage set-up was a horrible design by Jeep, because people seem to have this issue even with perfectly good trans mounts. I'm looking into some sort of better design of my own, maybe fabbing up a bracket that supports the pin but is attached to the frame only. This way, it wouldn't matter if the trans moved, because the pin wouldn't be supported on one end by a hole in the trans.

Mine growls like a bear putting into 4LO, and then back into 4HI, but I only had to use low twice this winter. (Just got my Jeep last year.)
Was there a hole for a set screw where the pin goes into the transfer case? I'm trying to find a diagram of the transfer case, but not having luck.
Maybe someone else can jump in. Maybe all NP249's growl and grind?

The grinding is normal, according to Jeep. The preferred method is to switch 4WD positions while the vehicle is moving at 2-3 MPH, although it can be shifted at a stop, if needed. This is actually in the owner's manual. but there is also an explanation here
Glad I found this thread, I'm gonna go lube mine up now. No wise cracks!

I just had this happen today (thus why I searched and found this thread). We were in a somewhat isolated spot and had no tools on hand. (I was driving it home from purchasing it, and stopped down by the river for a swim - totally not prepared for working on the rig!)
In my case I got the shifter dropped to 4lo, but it wouldn't engage and it wouldn't move out of that position. So stepping on the gas was just like being in neutral, and I could not change it to another driveable gear.
Since I'm a complete newbie (did I mention that I *just* bought this today?), and I had no tools, and I was nowhere near anyone who could help, I pretty much panicked w/o letting my kids know that I was panicking. We pushed it forward a few feet: still stuck. Turned it off and on: no change. Looked under the jeep: lots of mechanical-looking thingamajigs.
So, with all efforts failing, what FINALLY FIXED IT was simply toggling from "comfort" mode to "power" mode. The shifter then moved like my 16yo son when he sees a pretty girl: all smooth and swagger, like nothing's wrong.
I've gleaned a lot of great info from this thread, so I know some things that I'm going to look at when I have a chance. In the meantime, do any of you well-experienced folk have any idea why toggling to "power" mode would have made that difference?
Oh, and I'm eternally grateful to have found this thread! I was fearing posting a new thread, only to get thirty responses telling me to use the search function. 'Cuz I've been using the search function for quite a while w/o success. I finally used the google configuration mentioned in the "how to search" thread.

Old fart with a wrench
The reason for the grind is putting the transmission in NEUTRAL! The easiest way is to stop, put it in park, then shift letting off on the brake so it will roll a little. If you shift with the trans in neutral, the trans shaft is still spinning from internal friction so you get the grind.
You might want to check your engine and trans mounts. With bad mounts, the engine will torque up allowing the cross shaft to come out of it's pivot.
