06 3.7l exhaust confusion
called a local exhaust shop that i have used before to see some prices on an exhaust for my 3.7l Cherokee and he basically said that since the stock pipe is already 2.5" there is not much room for anything larger and with it having the cats on the y pipe i couldn't change them out. so he suggested since my pipes are still in good condition just doing a magnaflow muffler. they said it would be around 160 total. just wanted some opinions on what to do since i have seen cat backs online for 300-600 and i wasn't sure what just putting a performance muffler is going to do

Welcome to CF. A performance cat-back system will give you the best sized pipe for the engine you have, and should include mandrel bent tubes to eliminate the pinched/wrinkled/shrunk bends in factory, or cheaper systems. It also includes a higher flowing, but not necessarily louder muffler. The combination of the free flowing pipes, and better muffler is what adds the HP numbers, typically between 5-10% depending on manufacturer.
The more expensive kits have been shown to give the best return on HP, but they tend to be louder too.

i have no problem with it being louder in fact id rather it be louder and deeper. ive watched some videos with the magnaflow mufflers and they sound a little"ricy" so do you think it would be cheaper to have my shop just do new piping from the cat back with a performance muffler or by lets say a gibson or magnaflow pre boxed one then pay to have it installed?

It'll be cheaper if your shop does it, but how will it be done?
As long as the pipe is mandrel bent and smooth, and isn't squeezed down smaller in size, or "wrinkled", when doing the bends, it will be fine. If not, you might just as well stick a muffler on the stock pipes.
