03 WJ Overland Info
I'm going to be going and looking at an 03 Overland today, but want to know what I should look for with it. it's got the 4.7 with 104k miles on it. it's at a Jeep dealership and they are asking $8000 for it, but claim it's very clean and in great condition (I dont know if it actually is because they dont have pics of it). Also, what problems can I expect to have with it?

Joking aside, it's almost impossible to say what kind of problems you may encounter without knowing the history of the vehicle. Eight large is more than I would spend though.

I agree. It's listed for 8k I wont pay that though. I was just wondering if there was anything common on these 4.7's. as far as I can tell from carfax, there isn't much history other than it's been down here in south florida for all but a few months of it's life. It's only had 2 owners and the second owner bought it where it's now for sale. it looks like it was a repo from the first owner who only had it for a few months. there are only a few service records, but nothing actually says what was done other than the recalls that were performed. I'm gonna go look at it tonight and see what i think.

Check all electrical equipment that you want working – works.
Check that the aircon/blend doors work – blowing hot/cold, driver/passenger, as required.

Play cool with the 4.7. It's a good motor if maintained and not abused.

Usual smell dipstick of oil and tranny and visual check for bad discoloration . Smell inside oil cap. Battery terminals. Its the minor things that can tell if a car was actually cared about or just driven and forgotten about. Hell even check air pressure and tire wear for alignment issues

Look thru the wheels at the brake rotors. A thin coating of rush is not unusual if it's not been driven recently, but deep grooves are not good.
BTW, even new car's rotors will rust if it rained overnight. That's why the brakes will squeal or moan the first time they're used backing out of a driveway. Look at the muffler to judge it's condition. While you're on your knees, look at the rear brake backing plates to see is the axle seals are leaking. They should still be good at 104K.
When I bought my 2000 WJ, it had just been detailed. The only thing I could find on the interior was a little wear in the outside edge of the driver's seat and a few cracks in the foam part of the driver's arm rest. Not bad for 128K. I bought it a year ago from a small lot in Rome, NY that only sells PA cars. I paid $4200 for it. Judging by the paint and panel mounting bolts, all the parts were original, so no body damage. All the windows worked and the A/C was blowing cold, the heater hot, and blowing from all the right places. It also had complete maintenance records. I couldn't pass this one up and 24 hrs. later, I was driving it home.
BTW. it's got the 4.0 and 242 transfer, so reliability is the best I could get.

Wow! Here’s one available this side of the pond – for £1,495 (US$2,390)

I guess that is the price we pay for gas at around US$8 per US gallon.
I pay around US$400 for annual fully comp. insurance on my 4.7L WJ – but a 30 year old would be looking at somewhere in the region of US$2,500 and a 25 year old probably would not find insurance at any price.
With so few able to afford the running costs and insurance – market forces dictates cheep prices.

About the steering wheel being on the wrong side, don't knock it until you've tried it! I spent some time in the UK and the hardest part was a "round-about". You have to remember which way to turn! After picking up the "hired" car at Gatwick, the first thing I hit was a big traffic circle. I had to go around it twice before I saw the sign for where I wanted to go. "Multiple carriageways" are fun too. The left one is the slow lane, right?
