03 grand cherokee death wobble

I can't find the source of the vibration in the steering wheel. What's your thoughts

Fred/N0AZZ 10-23-2016 10:19 AM

Can you define your usage of "Death Wobble"?

Cleman Simpson 10-24-2016 09:09 AM

My 04 GC Laredo 4x4 had a terrible death wobble in the front end when I bought it. I changed the steering damper shock, replaced the mismatched tires on the vehicle with new matched all terrain tires, replaced one wheel rim that did not run true on the spin balancer, and tightened the upper front shock bolts that someone had left very loose when replacing the front shocks. Death wobble now completely cured.

Death wobble

I use to replace my steering damper but that was only a 8 month fix even time until I finally replaced my trac bar and boom nice and tight and no wobble. But the front suspension on the GC are notorious for a lil 45 mph wib ration is u got a tire unbalanced.

GOODLUCK

If you have done any off-roading in it you may have some mud and debris built up on the inside of the wheel rims which will totally unbalance the front tires, even if they were balanced yesterday. I can't count how many times I have had to pull all four tires off of one of my 4x4 trucks to clean mud out of the rims. Make sure when you have the tires balanced that the person doing the balancing cleans the wheels completely before balancing them. Jolerking is right about the trac bar. Mine needs a new one soon but for now the other stuff I changed has cured the problem long enough for me to get through hunting season which opens in teo days here. New trac bar is on my list for next spring when I do more extensive repairrs and modifications.

Also you need to carefully examine the front tires for uneven wear or shock cupping which will definitely cause shake in the front end. if the tires are malformed you need to rotate them or replace them and correct the problem which messed them up.

Death Wobble is a very violent uncontrollable shake of the front end. Big difference from a bad vibration. Always inspect the tires all the way around. Check the wheels too. Dents etc. Even lug nuts are overlooked sometimes.
Then move on to the front suspension. Takes 2 people. Lay under the Jeep and have some one rock the steering wheel back and forth. See what has slop in it. The parts that move before the tires start to move. Replace those parts. Steering stabilzer is always a good upgrade, but for fixing a problem that is just a band aid.

Like so many never returned!

dave1123 11-04-2016 01:06 PM

We get that a lot! Or people who ask an ambiguous question with no information and expect us to figure it out.

Fred/N0AZZ 11-05-2016 11:17 AM

Dave got new eyes lol.

Yes and some call a slight shimmy a death wobble so you never know :dunno:

andrewmp6 11-06-2016 01:39 AM

Sad truth is any piece of the whole suspension can do it,From the ball joints to a track bar any part bad can do it.

dave1123 11-06-2016 02:55 PM

You haven't lived until you've experienced TRUE death wobble! I thought I was going to die! The glove box popped open!

Cleman Simpson 11-06-2016 06:01 PM

LOL, mine would shake so bad your eyes would blur. I would have to pull over and come to a complete stop then try to ease it up to 50 mph or so without it starting to shake.

dave1123 11-06-2016 07:44 PM

you mean arm wrestle it over to the side of the road? I was going 55 in a curve with a guardrail and drop-off coming up!

Jeepin'_Aint_EZ 11-06-2016 07:56 PM

If your ass don't pucker, you haven't experienced death wobble

dave1123 11-06-2016 08:03 PM

IDK because I've never been in one when it happened, but my uncle says CJs are the worst! He says parts start falling off when it happens!
