My parent's jeep is in the process of crapping out and will probably be needing an engine soon. The local garage claimed it was a blown rod and offered to fix the problem for 4k which they can't afford, I'm looking for options. The noise is really bad, I've yet to hear it, but my parents are quite familiar with valve slap and claim it isn't that. If they've got a busted rod what are my options?
I would assume the best is a remanufactured engine, if so any recommendations on where to buy one, I'm in Rochester, NY which is where the work will be done.
Also how much work is involved in pulling a jeep engine? I could pull the engine in my volvo 240 in under 2 hours which had a nice wide open engine bay but still haven't figured out how to pull the turbo on my extremely cramped 98 v70xc so my abilities vary.
Any better manual then a haynes to go after this with?

I'd buy a Junkyard engine, but if you dont have much mechanical experience its not a walk in the park, and requires hoists and the like. If you have the shop install a good working used engine it will cost less than a rebuild however. Not many options for you to be honest.

What years will have a drop in engine for this jeep? The local police auction is coming up and there are 2 '94s and a '95. The last two from the same years that went up went for 150 and 170 so they are affordable.
