Hello All,
New user here with an 02 WJ 4.7L V8.
Vehicle is currently at ~110k miles (I purchased the vehicle ~2yrs ago at ~95k miles).
I am currently experiencing some stalling / failed restart issues.
After some searching on this forum I'm suspecting the issue is with Crankshaft Position Sensor or some other Fuel System related issue.
However this is coming on the heels of some cooling system / overheat issues.
I don't have any past experience with fuel systems, so before I go too deep into that I would like the advice of those more knowledgeable than myself that I'm headed down the right path and not missing some connection to the cooling system issues.
My first check will be the Crankshaft Position Sensor, as it seems this fits as potential cause (I'm unsure, but seems possible this could have also been damaged during the engine overheat event?).
Some history on the current stall / failed restart attempt issue:
Some history on the cooling system issue:
Thanks in advance! I really appreciate any help or insight!

Some history on the current stall / failed restart attempt issue:
- 3/6: After leaving in the morning, and traveling 3/4mi from home the car stalled on the way up a very steep hill
- I attempted but was unable to restart the car
- I left the vehicle and was away for several hours before returning (I was with my 2 toddlers at the time and the sole caretaker so needed to make other arrangements)
- Upon returning to the vehicle I was able to restart easily on first attempt
- I attempted the short drive home
- The vehicle stalled on the very steep hill at the approach of my house (thankfully I was able to just barely coast into my driveway before losing momentum...driveway is on a severe incline)
- I attempted but was unable to restart the vehicle
- 3/7: Vehicle started easily on first attempt and I pulled into the garage so it would be easier to start diagnosing the issue
- The pattern of easy starts on cold and failed restart attempts has continued for multiple cycles
- Notes:
- The failed restart attempts occur after the vehicle is running for < 2mins (and outside temp was around freezing) so the engine was not yet getting up to normal operating temp
- I am able to restart the engine after shutting down when applying WOT
- Both battery and alternator appear to operating normally based on voltage tests
Some history on the cooling system issue:
- Low Coolant Levels observed over the course of a few weeks in January
- Added Coolant, monitored, added more coolant (levels dropped over time so seemed to be a slow leak in the system)
- (1/29) Added a Leak Repair Solvent
- Coolant level continued to show OK in the reservoir with continued monitoring
- (3/5) Car overheating issue experienced as I was arriving home
- Coolant level in reservoir still OK
- Observed Radiator Cap was missing
- Purchased and installed new Radiator Cap
- The stall issue on 3/6 occurred on the first drive after replacing the radiator cap
- At this point I started to consider any other issues related to the cooling system and it occurred to me that I should have also bled the system so I completed this on 3/7
Thanks in advance! I really appreciate any help or insight!
