02 Jeep Grand Cherokee Mouse Damage To Wiring
 

Hello!

I am hoping you guys can help me identify the parts I need to repair some damage that some mice have done to my 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo. It is a V6 engine.

I am by no means a car or mechanical expert. I can change the spark plugs, battery, tires, fluids, etc but otherwise lack knowledge.

When I turn the key the radio works, but I get no "click", the engine doesn't even try to turn over and i think the battery is fine. The damage is obvious. Can you guys look at the pictures of the damage and tell me what parts i need to order? Based on my Googling thus far it seems to be part of the way the engine gets electricity.

Hopefully you guys can provide links to parts that can be found on advanceautoparts.com or autozone.com or another national chain.

That sucks, I'm just thinking even if you fix all that what else have they damaged that you can't see.

Just from your pics, that's the injector wiring harness. Look at the bottom of the fuse/relay box (PDC) under the hood for more damage. Obviously you're not getting power to the starting circuit. Unfortunately, the whole system needs to be inspected for damage. Did you look inside the air filter box for a nest? That's the most common place for one. You can try a junkyard for the injector harness, but you will have to do some splicing of the wires.

The worst case scenario I've seen on this stuff was porcupine damage to the brake hoses. They ate the rubber for the salt on them.

Good call on the nest. Sure enough there was a huge next under the filter. I looked at the rest of the wiring but not under the box, but I found no damage elsewhere. I am hoping I can just repair it with sections from a new harness with splicing and using heat shrink connectors.

Yes, you can do that, but solder all your splices to save yourself problems in the future. Some of those sensor wires are low voltage/low amps so they need clean connections. You're in luck because the main feed for that injector harness comes in the back.

One other thing that I would recommend is to use the heat shrink tubing over your soldered splices. I found the best place to get it from is a ford dealer. One reason I say get it from a dealer is because I worked for a ford dealer and that is what they have in stock and it works great. The heat shrink tubing that is sold in the after market doesn't have the wax lining on the inside to protect it from getting water in your splices. Most of your wiring you can repair it and save some $$$$. Make sure you check the ignition wire at the starter to make sure the mice didn't chew through it.
