I bought this 88 xj from a mechanic who said it ran 2 years ago but low and behold the motor was shot.:( It has been sitting but my pa and i bought a 4.0 bored out .30 over with rebuilt tcase and tranny. Only thing right now is we dont know what year it came out of so we dont know the tranny case and some of the wiring is different...
Plans for it are to be a daily driver and weekend wheeler. Wanna get a 3" inch lift and cram some 33's in there.Attachment 43121

Thanks, Yah i picked this up for 300 so really not to worried about to much, have any ideas on what lift I should go with?

Z71Gladiator 04-01-2011 04:07 PM

I have a 3 inch lift in mine and I just kind of pieced mine together as I got money.

I have heard really good things about rusty's offroad if you are wanting to go with a kit.

Rubicon Express is a good brand but can be expensive.

When I put mine together I got most of my stuff from fat bobs garage.

My list:

3" lift coils (fat bobs)
3" lift leaf springs (fat bobs)
3" lift track bar relocate bracket (fat bobs)
3" lift sway bar links (fat bobs)
Transfer case drop (quadratec) this can be found on many different sites and would be cheaper just to make your own.
3 degree leaf shims (rustys offroad)

With all of that stuff I don't get any vibrations or have any problems with it but from the sounds of it all jeeps are different and yours might not need the t-case drop or leaf shims, I just bought them to make sure because its my DD and didn't want any problems.

Frequent websites I go to for parts:
www.fatbobsgarage.com
www.quadratec.com
www.ironman4x4fab.com
www.rustysoffroad.com

Hope this helps.

Yeah that helped actually, the lift you pointed out is cheaper than the one i was looking at and has the same parts, but thats something that i was hoping i wouldnt run into with the vibes since mine will be a DD as well. What size tires are you running on 3"

I am only running 235/75/15's right now. They still have a lot of tread left on them.

I have heard of people running 33's with trimming and 31's without though. When I get new tires I will probably be getting 31's

xx88cherokeexx 04-01-2011 07:04 PM

Yeah, i have 31's on now, and they'll sit fine but my friend has a plasma torch and he said he'll make 33's fit and flex for me.

Z71Gladiator 04-01-2011 07:06 PM

Yeah if you don't mind cutting I would run 33's as long as your axles will hold up to it.

xx88cherokeexx 04-01-2011 07:08 PM

i got the stock axle set up with 3.73 stock gears, should that hold up allright?

Z71Gladiator 04-01-2011 07:11 PM

Is your rear axle dana 35, 44 or chrysler 8.25?

xx88cherokeexx 04-01-2011 07:25 PM

D35

Z71Gladiator 04-01-2011 07:31 PM

I have never had to deal with that axle but have heard very bad things about it.

Personally the most I would go is 31's on that axle. You might be able to get away with 33's if you don't offroad much but I really wouldn't recommend a stock dana 35 pushing 33's especially if it is your DD but that is just my opinion.

xx88cherokeexx 04-01-2011 07:35 PM

alright, yah i dont know much about jeeps as this is my first one, i just know that i only will probably go wheeling 3-4 times a year is about it

Z71Gladiator 04-01-2011 07:39 PM

I guess some people say they are fine on the dana 35......
http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f9/bi...30-oem-328004/

I wouldn't recommend it if it is going to be your DD but I guess some people have done it with no problems.

It sounds like if you have a heavy foot they are not the things you want.. which is gonna be an issue.
