UK truck with a couple of upgrades

Hi guys

Thought i'd share a couple of pics, so far I've lifted the truck 3 inches, extended shocks, rear sway removal and disconnects for the front

Seems like pretty good flex to me considering the budget, certainly better than my old IFS isuzu but maybe not quite as good as my defender.

This is a little deceptive as the grass hides the flexing needed at the top, it probably didn't help that it was real slippy and the heavy isuzu just couldnt get enough traction, the XJ made it look easy.

however i came unstuck a little later in the water, big fail on my part but the trooper pulled me out.

bushwacked, bumper and 33s

OK, getting a bit more serious now.

I got some bushwacker style flares and put them on, the winch bumper has been sat in my yard a while waiting for the flares to go on and finally the 33s, which would be better with some modulars but for the moment a spacer will do.

still got a few more bits to go on, the snorkel and the wheel carrier.

The snorkle needs to wait until i've taken the ABS off as i need to relocate the washer bottle to where the pump is, I can then route the snorkle along the inside of the fender.

Quick question should the flares be cut out inside the arch, just thinking it would give me a little more suspension movement if that was the case, I may do anyway as I can't see it making any real strength difference.

looks good nice build... Do you plan on adding any lights?

Darkwolfe 01-01-2013 10:44 AM

I plan to add two lights, in this front picture you can just see reflected on the front clip where i welded two tabs to the back of the centre top bar on the bumper. The plan is they'll hang down from there.

I kinda dig the rear sun visor thing

C_Squared 01-01-2013 01:08 PM

Looks great, keep us updated.

JakeWI 01-01-2013 01:53 PM

looks good. what winch are you planning on?

Darkwolfe 01-01-2013 02:30 PM

The aero thing on the jeep is standard on UK Orvis models, not so keen myself but it's had quite a few comments.

As for a winch, I'm undecided, last time i bought one, for my isuzu apache, i never used it and ended up selling unused with the wich bumper when I parted out the truck. If i do get one, it'll be a no name 12,000lb unit I guess.

So did anyone have thoughts on me cutting out the bushwackers to give more room, those 12.5's are K71's and real close to rubbing on full lock due to their square profile.

Got another question for you guys, the wheel carrier I have is a mopar one for a mk1 xj, mines a facelift so I know there's going to be some modification necessary.

Can you confirm the following, I'll need to mount as far right as possible to clear the lower wiper on the facelift. Also if possible I'll need to drop it a little to take the slam bracket away from the glass, are those the only 2 issues?

couple more updates

no answers on the flares or the wheel carrier but pushed ahead anyway in the hope it's going to work out.

I don't have pictures of the fenders but trimming the inside while making them slightly less rigid has allowed me about 1.5inches more upwards travel and no rub at full stuff.

I've also fitted a snorkel as it gets real wet here in the winter, more so in the summer ;)

http://i1198.photobucket.com/albums/...ps01bd8921.jpg

The mopar wheel carrier was a bit more of a game but came together well. I bolted to the rear bumper in the standard mk1 way but needed to move it as far right as possible to clear the lower wiper assembly. Not too much of a pain but it was close on clearance. I also needed to put a reinforcement plate on to the rear quarter connected to the carrier bracket to firm it up. It's on 33s so didn't want it sagging as it opened.

I also needed to trim the stock tailgate plate to get it to come in under the window, I think the result looks pretty good. Final task was to extend the wheel studs on the carrier to carry the wider rubber.

some more pics around the truck as it looks now.

What I need to do now is get my *** in gear and fix some issues, the aircon compressor clutch bearing has gone, the left front wheel bearing has also seen better days, then a front prop U is starting to get a little noisy.

....also needs a new radio and antenna.

Detour 01-14-2013 06:55 PM

Diggin the rig, digging the leather seats, digging the rear visor, I'd like one of those bad boys!
Question, did you import that carrier, or did Jeep over look that it swings into traffic over there??

Keep up the good work!

Darkwolfe 01-15-2013 01:08 PM

thanks for the comments, lovin the way it looks right now but as mentioned i need to do a couple of jobs on it. Got the bearing for the AC compressor, got the wheel bearing, just need to source the other parts and I'll be all set.

As for the carrier, it's a UK sourced part and I guess Jeep UK just didn't care.... or think. I plan to add a strain cable to it to stop it swinging out too far, should limit most of the danger I hope.
