The same old 95XJ build.
So last fall I got rid of a '12 JK for a Focus but still wanted to have something to play with. I found a 95 XJ in County trim, 4.0 auto with 230k miles for 3500. It had lunchbox lockers frt. & rear(D30/8.25), 3" lift, frt winch bumper & rear Warn w/carrier bumper, riding on 33's.
Here it is after I picked it up. https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...eb5bd44a3.jpeg I found a little more rust than I originally thought it had, so during the Christmas break I repaired the pass floor and did a 2x6 rocker. https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...32da516df8.jpg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...e86806e420.jpg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...c97f5dc89d.jpg Finished product. https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...b5d520f5c7.jpg So after a couple of broken frt axle shaft, I've decided to make it a little more Mike proof. The plan. 6.0 LS /6L80E 14" coilovers all around 3-link frt Double tri 4-link rear 37's w/beadlocks. Full interior cage w/frt tube doors. As far as axles go I haven't quite finalized those yet (waiting on a buddy on what he wants for a Hi-9 setup ) https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...d432830d8b.jpg Picked up a new welder. https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...65704b184f.jpg Reperposed a tool cart to hold the Mig & Tig welders. https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...dd13c984ee.jpg Everyone needs to have a fab table. |
Bought a MB105 bender and did a air over hydraulic conversion.
https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...88c331762d.jpg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...ee93b6e67c.jpg Got a copy of Bend Tech software. https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...3b4a014426.jpg Gut the interior. https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...f29bf49504.jpg Cleaning out the engine compartment. https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...6275041a9e.jpg A & B pillar started. https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...0500c64b0c.jpg As tight as I could get it with my limited ability (I'm an engine guy by trade ). |
https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...8ec5906265.jpg
Oh no something fell off. https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...1c620d7be1.jpg Set up a D30 JK housing I had laying around. Set for a 3" stretch and for ride height. Looking for 4" of up travel. The width of JK axles will be the minimum I will install so that should be good. I should have a bare mock up LS block later this week. |
bends are good!! way better then mine.. how big is that table top? i need to build one real bad..

4'×4'x.250" (32" high). 2x3 box tube with casters on all corners.

Getting some prep work done on the main frame rails & RuffStuff frame stiffeners. Found a 6.0 LS & 4L60 out of 2000 Chevy with wiring harness & ECU. Now to sell a couple of things and get it here.
|
https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...df201e0e99.jpg
RuffStuff frame stiffeners. https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...60c00efcd7.jpg 2"×3"×0.188"×74 1/2" main frame rails, these will slide into the existing stock uni-rails & form the basis for the chassis. |
https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...5df983bcdf.jpg
https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...87a3160c20.jpg Got drivers side frame rail tacked in. Moving on to the other side tomorrow. Then I think I'm going to build a set of hi-stands to be able to finish weld the rails in a more comfortable position, my core isn't what it once was. |
|
Awesome build so far. Are you going to graft the nose back on after the engine and trans install or are you going to leave it more of an buggy style. :head:
|
Dan, I will have the fenders & hood back on but it'll be just a tube front end.

Starting the rear bumper.
https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...13c86d1a78.jpg Laying it all out. https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...fdee73c647.jpg Test fitting. https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...c084ce0e5a.jpg Waiting on UPS to deliver the RuffStuff 2"receiver to finish it up. The reason it's so wide is I plan on having rear tube fenders attach to it. |
Little more work on the rear bumper.
https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...9543b79ccc.jpg I'll try & finish it up tomorrow. |
This is awesome

Sick build! Looking forward to the progress 👍🏻

Little more work on the rear bumper.
https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...3f2ccb5cbb.jpg Picked up a GM TH400 tonight and the 6.0l should be delivered tomorrow. I'll finish the rear bumper mounting tomorrow morning then move on to the front frame and engine installation mock up. |
Little more work done today. Rear bumper finished. The reason it's a little wide is I plan to have the tube fenders tie into them.
https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...2e3dcfbb8b.jpg Now onto the front frame. |
Started with this but didn't like the height.
https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...af668a28bc.jpg Redid the rails to a new height and ended up here. https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...578a20811c.jpg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...6440da5662.jpg The picture is a little deceiving as the framerail is level and the engine has a 3deg upward tilt. Tomorrow I'll work on capping the tube & boxing it in. |
Like the build, looking forward to see where this goes...
|
Trying to firm up a couple of decisions for the build. I have to decide on tires, leaning towards Maxxis bias Trep's. Pretty sure I'll go with ORI air struts. Trying to find a good deal on 1tons if not then a fabricated 9" for the rear, possibly the front also, if not then the best deal I can find on a Ford D60.
|
Front rails burned in, started to put some reinforcement plating on but started to run out of gas. Going to get another tank for the TIG also, for when I start the cage install. I also have to get some tips for the plasma cutter.

Got a late start this morning but have Sunday & Monday to get more done. I went & picked up some more gas for both of my welders. I spent some time to redo the cart to hold these bigger bottles.

The 6.0 finally got here today.
https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...8876d1f853.jpg Test fitting it into the chassis. https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...1ee9a1e880.jpg I think I'll cut the firewall out a little bit for a few more inches of set back. https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...d75d1f1fae.jpg I think I'm going with a different oil pan than the stock truck pan, probably a Moroso road race one. That will give me 26" of ground clearance (frame is at 25" of clearance ). I'll wait till I get the TCASE & frt suspension figured out till I worry about exhaust. |
So I cut the firewall a little bit to get another couple of inches of set back. This should put the axle center line just under the front of the oil pan , slightly behind the first set of oil pan bolts.
https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...496fd4e751.jpg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...3475e4b898.jpg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...7a48b2207f.jpg We'll it's only more work. |
So I decided to start to remove the floor pans and redo the floor. I need I was going to have to notch it anyway for the upper links, just sucks a little because I just replaced the passenger one last Xmas.
https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...ddfc187d00.jpg I decided to leave the trans tunnel in for the time being more for reference than anything else. I'm having a little trouble in getting the upper cage bars in, my tube notcher doesn't do offsets as I need to have the outside one with a funky offset for the best headroom. https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...b1a89c9891.jpg I was able to get the passenger side close by shimming the cutter head just need to get some different bolts to shim the tube holder so I can do the opposite side (I just needed to mirror the pass. side) |
Keep up the great work!! It looks even more awesome in person. I just wanted to say thanks again for the great price on the bumper and winch. Also I subscribed because I can't wait to see it done!
|
Nice. Subbed
Hell if I knew you had a winch I'd have bought it too. |
This is awesome. Very similar to my build, bit you have made 10x more progres. I'm gonna be watching this one.

Got a new Plasma cutter so I started to make some tie-ins for the frame to my 2x6 rockers and also to mount the cage to.
https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...53dd0d502e.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...38b0f10767.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...69bb111388.jpg The cage is starting to take shape. https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...c8d1af2bd6.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...0c3b4244ba.jpg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...5ca750af5c.jpg I wish I new what I was doing. I feel pretty confident in how it's going,I believe it'll be able to hold up to normal off roading mishaps, flops and such just not sure about barrel rolls at 100+. More work to do tomorrow. |
Didn't get much done yesterday as I had a bout of builders block kind of like writers block but worse. It looks like I'll have to ditch the centered rear passenger seat idea. I was going to have a race style seat in the rear also but will now put some kind of folding seat the just in case it's needed.
Got a little work done today. https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...70465d5bf3.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...a72d4d266c.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...38b394cbae.jpg Not sure how I want to finish the rear part of the cage to have it all tie into the chassis. I think I think I'll mockup for the rear axle and get a feel for how the rear suspension will come out. Need to get the upper & lower arm mount locations figured out, also placement of the upper shock mounts. |
So it's been awhile since I have posted progress on the build. I have been working some side jobs to pay for this project. I had these dropped off yesterday.
https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...a37df58d7b.jpg Ford Dana 60 and a ford 10.5 . https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...220e691598.jpg I had to slide it under there to see how it'll look, man is it big. I just ordered some more link parts from RuffStuff, gotta like the 22% discount they have running right now. I have another side job this weekend so won't get much done but next weekend looks like I'll have free. Anyone want to stop by and help me figure out my link setup? |
awesome build sir. cant wait to see more.
